I debated posting this, but I knew you'd want to know. I bought a new tractor, which was delivered yesterday, along with a bush-hog and finishing mower. In the process of unloading the finishing mower by hand, the 70 year old delivery guy can't handle the weight as we lower the standing mower to a flat position and he lets go. Of course, I let go, too, and I manage to get everything out of the way except my left big toe. I knew I was in trouble when it hit, but I restrained the scream and continued for over an hour as the old guy slowly explained to me how to operate the tractor and implements and my shoe slowly filled with blood.

Great thing: the guy left before I passed out. Not so great thing: no one's home but my seven year old and me. I get inside, get my shoe off, and my sock is soaked up to the ankle in blood, but apparently the bleeding has stopped. At this point, I call my wife, who is having dinner with a friend about 20 minutes away. She insists that I take off my sock to assess the damage. I don't want to see it. She insists. I comply, take off sock, see gash across second joint of toe and instantly become nauseated and lightheaded (puss). I'm tired of typing, but the results were several stitches, a broken big toe, and a Lortab scrip. The only thing that saved my toe was that we were unloading onto gravel and not solid ground or cement. I'm thinking of sending the sock to Cooperstown. What do you think?

As someone who has injured herself three times this week, I feel your pain. Mine's not nearly as serious as yours though.

Damn. This whole incident begs the question, why do these places hire gramps for manuel labor? I pretty much had to unload my sofa and chair the other day because I was afraid it was gonna kill the old man who delivered it and everyone that works at Lowe's is pushing 90 here.

I don't think I would have been able to hold the screaming in. Tough.

Glad you're OK, Mike! Anybody know the status of Old Kentucky's thumb?

At first, I thought maybe you had somehow managed to permanently dispose of Sgt. Hulka.

1. This board indeed maims a lot of digits
2. Tractor? Does Peter Buck know there's an Indie/farm board on the net--can one of us get unruly on a plane or stop eating animals next
3. If I lose a digit, expect a hiatus from moi, I'll be on percosets and rum
4. be careful! You only get twenty!
