That was my opinion too, when I first read about the addition of a choir: OH CHRIST, NO! But having heard it a dozen times now I dig it a lot, best one of his since Mirrorball, I think.

The music's not bad, but the lyrics are way too ham-fisted. I doubt I'll be pulling this off the racks too often.

Sounds like a good recommendation to me. I think Mirrorball is pretty underrated, and I actually like it more than Freedom.

I may buy this after all.

I'd say "naive" instead of "ham-fisted," but then I like Joan Jett and Yoko Ono too.

I praised this in another thread and was told that I was an old boring hippie and I should drag myself off to a dark corner of the forest and let the wolves eat me. (Some truth... hippie part not the wolves... although I actually am beatnik-identifying more than flower child... it's the urban LA thing).

The lyrics are simple, and to some that could be fists of ham. They are topical, and with any luck will seem amusingly artless in about ten years. But the important words "living with war every day" "flatscreen" "liar" "peace" rise above the quick notebook jottings and supported by an uprising of guitar and three-chords-and-the-truth garage outrage... have a surprising sticking power.

And "Sleeps With Angels" is the great forgotten Neil gem of the 90's, not "Mirrorball"

I am sorry, I just can't help it... turn this up very loud.

I am looking for a nice spot under a Ponderosa pine....

Everyone knows I'm not a Neil Young fan, but have always admired his songwriting abilities. This latest album just seals his coffin for me. It's plain awful.

It's not forgotten around here, I've always thought it was brilliant. I said since Mirrorball because it was after Sleeps with Angels.

I was just listening to Harvest Moon today (early 90s?)

Awful production, a mediocre record on the whole, but damn i respect Neil Young for at least keepin' on keepin' on. I haven't heard any of his stuff after Harvest Moon though.

I'm trying to remember an era when Neil Young's lyrics weren't naive and ham-fisted. That's pretty much the contract you agree to upon purchase of any Neil reckid.

It's also why we love the guy.

"Neil Young" and "new" should never be in the same sentence.

I had high hopes for this.
But I heard the single on the radio this weekend and was greatly disappointed.
"Ham-fisted" lyrics is about right.
Bummer.
I love Neil, but he can be pretty hit and miss. Sadly, the one song I did hear was a miss.

Of course, most of the board's taste seems to be the polar opposite of mine these days, so...
BUY NOW!!!

I felt I had no other choice but to (at least temporarily) change my screen name.

This is awesome. Thanks for setting it up, splates.

I'm not even half way through the piece, and I can hardly hear the lyrics, but someone had to bang out a record like this: blunt, raw, haphazard, with no time for second thoughts.
