So I just finished moving most of the important shit in this new place, and I'm drinking a Smithwick's and wondering, what is a damn good way to store these records?

Bring it on!

I always thought they fitted perfectly into milk crates. Then i stole some. But they don't fit.

I currently have mine upright in a drawer that's always 'out'.

<---still searching for something better.

That would involve me stealing shit from a construction site. And as an ex-construction worker I hate those little shits that steal shit.

So i'm in a bind.

You just got to find the right size milkcrate.

Me, I use baskets from Ikea, and an antique box of my grandmothers with Chinese writing inside. In style.

you want to store them away? if it's in a storage space, one thing i've done is to put them in milk crates (or the $2 crates from target) and wrap the crates in bubblewrap a few times. then you can stack them about three-high without the weight crushing. this is also a good way to move vinyl cross-country in a vehicle.

I think he means he wants to store them near his turntable in his new place so he can listen to them at leisure.

what's your price range? Cause obviously you can build something, or steal milk crates or peach crates or whatever...

Started out with milkcrates for 33s/78s and smaller baskets for 45s. Now, I've a shelving system similar to this purchased as a set of two at a garage sale. I'm not so crafty when it comes to hammers, nails & scratch awls, but I'm fairly certain you could get all Squirrgled and whip something together with a little gumption & elbow grease.

It's the Expedit from Ikea. Strong, no sagging, holds lots of albums.

I believe some milkcrates work and others don't.
Someone once told me the older ones work & newer ones don't.

<---guilty of grabbing a milkcrate off the sidewalk at 4am on my way home from DJing only to realize the next day it was probably someone's make-shift recycling bin.

<---Felt a little bad.

But it fits my records.

Milkcrates at the moment, though after years of having them (nearly 7 years old on some of them) they are starting to sag. I need to pony up and grab one of those Ikea systems.

this is mostly true. in my experience, new crates are about a half-inch too small.

they're $100 and take about a half-hour to put together. it's a pretty great investment for anyone with a good-sized collection.

I just spent $100 on a 1080 cd storage bookcase, and still will need about 2 more. About how many records do you have in yours?

there are maybe 600 in the picture above, so i'd say it probably holds 1200+ if every cube is mostly filled.

linkee for those interested...sidenote: box and contents weigh 206 lbs. Damn. I might have to swing past the 'rents and pick one o' these up since they won't ship one--obviously.

Reviving this ancient thread to see if anyone knows of any good places to find record crates online. Preferably wooden ones because I'm too lazy to make them myself.

I like old milk crates, when the records fit; it allows for flipping through the bins, like you would do at a record store. Easier than trying to read all that small type on all those narrow spines.

You just need a lot of floor space for that.

Floor space I have!

So the milk crates don't damage the bottoms of the album covers? That's the only thing I can really find online that isn't a $100+ cabinet of some kind.

Hell, no matter what, if you listen to them, there's gonna be some wear. So pull the stick out of yer butt and enjoy the music!!!
;)

But, if you're concerned about that kind of wear, lay a piece of particle board in the bottom of the crate. And just be careful when removing and replacing your albums.
