I worked for 3 years as a DJ in a skater/punk rock/college bar in Montreal. I was behind the bar with all the bar tenders---all young women. We all used to get wasted together. It was pretty fun a lot of the time, but god, sometimes it was really crazy/scary. Most nights we had no bouncer and had to take care of shit on our own---mainly by telling people off, but we did actually have a baseball bat behind the counter.

When you're in the mood and things are going well it can be really fun, but when you're tired and things are getting ugly it can really suck. After awhile you realize that dealing with drunkies is essentially like working in a daycare.

We had someone walk away with our subwoofer, skinheads show up, a bouncer beat the sh*t out of a customer, girls getting up and dancing on the bar, people smashing beer bottles on the floor, a girl-on-girl "show" on our pool table, and got shut down by the poilce multiple times... yup.

Being a bartender would be WAY WAY WAY better.

I don't know about how it is everywhere else, but around here you need to know somebody affiliated with the bar to get a job there. You can start out at places like Applebees and work your way up the circuit, but most people I know who are bartenders got their job through another person, or are in a band or DJ at the bar frequently that they now work at.
I've been trained and know all the basics, but I have never done it professionally. My uncle works at a bar when he isn't farming during the winter. Once I know which soda products are what on the trigger, I can handle it.
