Inspired by DHRJerico's "Important Albums From My Youth" thread, and its first post.

I was listening to the radio and heard DL's cover of
The Kinks - "Waterloo Sunset"

I didn't know who it was, I just stumbled upon it and you know... it werznt bad. In fact, it was pretty good. Yeah, they rocked it out a bit, but they also kinda make that work for it... it was still pretty. And Joe Elliott has the voice to pull it off.

Despite being a fan of Pyromania, I was very surprised to find out who had done the cover. I was impressed.

EDIT: Okay I got the album, scroll down for a YSI.

Not gonna buy the album, but impressed nonetheless.

It's an absolutely awesome album in general. I'm not ashamed in the slightest to say that I ran out and bought it the day it was released. There's not a bad song on it. They're covers of slightly more obscure material which makes the whole project a lot more genuine than most covers albums that just grab whatever was a band's biggest hit, which is always a recipe for a flop.

This is the best thing the band has done since Hysteria, easily (or, if you remove the sloppy multiple crappy ballads from Retro Active, that one.) It's like $7.99 at Circuit City this week if you don't mind missing out on the bonus tracks that Best Buy and Target have (two on each (one live, one studio,) both sets different) and Walmart has a separate bonus disc with five more covers.

(Or you can PM me if you want a "preview" )

Listening to this now.
3 songs in and I'm remembering why I loved Def Leppard.
There is none of the gloss that stunk up their 90's output -- it's straight-up rock covers of some pretty great songs.
Have a listen to the song that inspired this thread:

"Waterloo Sunset":

Here is the AllMusic review of the record:
(4.5 stars)
Stephen Thomas Erlewine Wrote:
Def Leppard always had a streak of glam running beneath their heavy rock -- listen to "Armageddon It" or "Photograph" for proof -- so it's no surprise that when the quintet decided to record a covers album in 2006, they devoted it to the '70s glam and hard rock that inspired them to pick up their guitars and play. What does come as a surprise is that the resulting Yeah! is a sheer delight, a roaring rock & roll record that's their best album since Hysteria. Often, cover albums get bogged down in reverence or ambition, as artists either offer interpretations that are straight copies or fussy reinterpretations as they busily try to make a favorite song their own. That's not the case here. Def Leppard alternate between fairly faithful renditions of familiar classics like T. Rex's "20th Century Boy," Badfinger's "No Matter What," or David Essex's "Rock On," to subtle reinterpretations where they make seemingly difficult covers seem easy and unmistakably Def Leppard. It's true on their streamlined, muscular take on Electric Light Orchestra's swirling, psychedelic "10538 Orchestra," but it's most notable on their remarkable reworking of the Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset," which now sounds like a power ballad from Hysteria without ever once sounding like it's an affront to the immortal original. This take on "Waterloo Sunset" works because it's informed by a palpable love of the original, and that love is apparent throughout this terrific record. But there are plenty of good covers albums that are fun merely because the band is having a good time. What makes Yeah! exceptional is that Def Leppard is reconnecting with the reason why they're even in a band by playing the rock & roll that inspired them in the first place. They're reinvigorated by this material, and by playing these songs, it's easier to appreciate what makes Def Leppard a great rock & roll band. Compare their versions of Free's "A Little Bit of Love" or Thin Lizzy's "Don't Believe a Word" to the originals -- they're not as big and bluesy as Free, but the huge riff that drives the song is a direct forefather of Leppard's powerful signature sound, and "Don't Believe a Word" hammers home that few bands built on Lizzy's twin guitar harmonies as well as this group did. But it's not just that these covers put Leppard's music in context; it's that they sound more like a genuine rock & roll gang than they ever have: listen to the truly raw take on the Faces' "Stay with Me," which may not be quite as sloppy as the original (how could it be?), but it's equally greasy and riveting -- plus, it's sung with raw gusto by guitarist Phil Collen, whose turn on the mic emphasizes that this is a sound of a true group. They still sound like Def Leppard -- there are still cavernous drums, huge guitars, and driving harmonies -- but they no longer sound as slick and calculated as they did on their albums after Hysteria; they sound alive and vigorous, making a convincing case that they're now their own best producers. If they could carry this sound and feel onto an album of originals, they would have a killer record, but saying that diminishes the accomplishment of Yeah!. It's a killer record in its own right, and more pure fun than anything yet released in 2006. Few bands could achieve an artistic comeback via a covers album, but as this glorious record proves, there are few bands like Def Leppard.

I'd pretty much agree.

Not bad, although I have absolutely no idea what the original song sounds like having never heard The Kinks before (outside of You Really Got Me, Lola and Come Dancing). Either way, it's not a bad song/cover choice.

It doesn't really sound like Def Leppard to me; If someone played this and made me guess who it was, I never would have figured on them. I'm guessing Mutt Lange's touch is what makes them sound like Def Leppard.

Too bad they have songs like "Pour Some Sugar On Me" weighing them down, regardless of the professed love from some here.

If they'd kept up with songs like "Photograph" I'd still love them.
This CD's at the station. I'll have to listen to it.

I think it's them, but it's little snippets of them spread out across all of the songs. A bit of them in this one, a bit of them in that one. That's how I hear it, anyway. More than any other covers album, I really hear how their influences made them who they are.

I totally agree that High 'n' Dry and Pyromania are classics, but there are an awful lot of great songs on Hysteria and even some pretty good ones on later albums. Retro Active is particularly cool if you ignore the ballads, and Slang is a really different, mature sound for them that I may be the only fan of. Adrenalize sounds like a band struggling to make it work in the shadow of losing a vital band member, and I just don't enjoy it all that much. I just got dirt-cheap used copies of Euphoria and X so I can't say much about them, but they don't sound as bad as I imagined they would.

i have everything thru slang. it's a good album, but sounds like they're going out of their way to fit in with the sound of that time (for def leppard). hadn't cared since, but maybe i'll check out this covers thang.

They definitely were, but I also think they were trying to get Joe to sing in a range that he could duplicate live. Man, he sounds terrible live on most of their stuff that requires him to go into the upper registers of his voice. What's funny about this album is that the songs I like the most are the two songs that sounds least like traditional Def Leppard - "Breathe a Sigh" and "Work it Out."

Euphoria's kind of in the Adrenalize vein, now that I'm listening to it again. It's not a classic, but it's a lot more fun to listen to. Definitely not a bad album, despite what I thought at the time it came out (disappointment at not carrying on more in the direction of Slang.)

A better question might be why you wander into Def Leppard threads when you've stated how much you hate this band on more than one occasion.

Just askin'.

Big thanks to The Mayor for sending this to me. This is better than expected. They really have a big phat sound on this album. It's good fun.

What I want to know is why can't they write good songs anymore?

I think they could in theory...it's just that they don't.

I saw some thing while flippin' the channels a couple years ago - it might have been "VH-1 Storytellers". Anyway, they were taking questions from fans in between songs...& someone asked why their more recent albums aren't more like "On Through The Night"/"High N Dry"/"Pyromania".

I don't remember who answered the question - it was probably Joe Elliot - but he flat out admitted that they put all the crappy ballads & mid-tempo tracks on their recent albums because "that's all radio will play".

At that point, you're not even making records - you're making programming.

It's a shame, too...because those first 2 albums ( & some of "Pyromania" ) are such classic 80's hard rock records.

This is a lot better than I expected, but still doesn't touch approach the greatness of the original (but I am a bit biased, I guess). And I agree, it does not sound like Def Leppard.

And I'll second it. On the list of great songs "Waterloo Sunset" is sitting somewhere next to Barry Manilow's Coca Cola jingles.
