funnily enough, the raging bitch in me didn't come out until a couple days ago, that was surprising.

I'm struggling right along with you. It's been about a week and I've only had a couple. My body and brain are both pretty pissed with me right now and are making me feel bad, in itchy, fidgety and headachy ways.

I have already begun to notice my improved sense of smell and tase and have insisted that we eat out vs. home cooked slop. This has made me increasingly unpopular at home with the mean lady who cooks my food. She now refuses to have sex with me.

In the words of Denis Leary (which probably means in the words of Bill Hicks before him), all you're going to miss are the shitting-in-your-pants-in-a-nursing-home years so you might as well go ahead and smoke.

I quit several years ago. It's definitely worth it.

Actually, yes.

I quit cold turkey, i.e. with no drugs. It took a cutting back period of several months, plus lots of mints for distraction before it finally took hold. For most cravings, I would put it off "just a 15 more minutes" or "another hour" and drive on. One day, I looked up and I couldn't remember my last cigarette.

Cravings pop up every now and again, though less frequently. Also, I know what a pain it was to stop, so I don't indulge them.

Ive had some lectures on the pharmacology of nicotine

Smoking is one of the hardest addictions to kick of all - its physiologically addicting too not just psychologically. Your body is used to operating with a certain amount of nicotine. Its a shock to go cold turkey.

Nicotine replacement (patches etc.) have been proven to help, but there are many social cues etc to smoking that mean just keeping your nicotine levels up isnt gonna completely stop your craving

Im quite impressed with people that can quit cold turkey though. Personally ive only ever smoked socially - ill smoke a whole pack in a few hours when im drinking hard, but never really feel like a cig any other time

I take some puffs when I'm drinking mostly. Though I've been known to indulge in cigars and a pipe occassionally.

i'm pretty much the same way. it really has no psychological hold on me...if i want to quit i just stop cold turkey. i've done it for months at a time with no problem. cold turkey is the only way to go as long as you're not talking about say benzos.

But you really didn't stop did you? It was temporary.

for 6 months at my longest clip.

i mean, quitting for life is just not something i will ever want to do. i enjoy smoking a cigarette every once in a while, but it's completely on my terms. I never mind putting a cigarette off.

what? no i was saying cold turkey is extremely hard when it comes to smoking. Nicotine is physically addictive and its a shock to your body to come off so fast. Patches/Gum help since they supply you with some nicotine, but none of the other 1000s of chemicals smoke contian (which are the ones that damage you, and arent physically addictive either)

thats why i said im impressed with people who can go cold turkey after smoking long term

meh i can't quit cold turkey nor am i prepared to quit smoking. i don't have the willpower just yet... maybe because of my lifestyle since i go out a lot and i drink a lot. i've been sick the past week and it's hard for me to not smoke even still. whatever.

The method I used to quit:

(My gf and I had this conversation not long after we first met)

Me: Yeah I just quit smoking a couple weeks ago.

Gf: Sweet.

Me: It's REALLY fucking hard though.

Gf: Well, if you ever want to get rid of me, just start smoking again.

I still do not smoke. That was a year and a half ago.

Although I have had a couple when I visit my boys in ATL.

It's a tough habit as everyone has already attested to; I never fully quit, because frankly, I just don't want to. I love to smoke, so I allow myself a few once a week now. That's enough for me, once I set that schedule up, there were no more cravings during the week and cutting back that much was really noticable healthwise.

I'm definitely scaling back once I bid adieu to this school.

Cold turkey is way easier than gum and the patch makes me have insane dreams.

With the gum, I'm wondering why I'm gnawing on this foul tasting shit when I could just be having a smoke.

Cold Turkey is the best way to get it out of your head.

the lady and I quit on may 1st. since then I've had 5 cigarettes, 4 of those being at a BBQ party/drunkathon we hosted where I was the grillmaster. but it really hurt the next morning, which is a good reminder to not fuck with that shit again. that's not to say i don't want any when i'm drinking, but i'm really happy w/ myself the next morning if I didn't smoke the night before. and plus $7-$8/pack? christ

Yeah, I quit in 1992, coinciding with meeting my future wife.

Started up off and on for a couple years, maybe averaging a pack a week, then when she got pregnant, quit completely. It's something what a strong woman can do to a man.

Only time I've smoked since '94 was one pack after my brother Matt died in '99. I found it in his stuff and smoked it in his memory. When my brother Pete died last month, I didn't smoke.
