I quit, cold turkey, 15 years ago and it was the best thing that I ever did for myself. It's hard as freaking hell, but it'll be worth it. Don't give up.

I carried a sealed pack of cigarettes in my purse. All I had to do was NOT open the cigarettes. Anytime I wanted a smoke, I just DIDN'T open the pack. It was very tempting, but I never opened it. I know that sounds weird, but it worked for me. Six months later, someone asked me if I had a smoke. I handed her the unopened pack of cigarettes, told her to keep them and that was the end of it for me.

Initially, I replaced cigarettes with coffee...up to 15 cups a day. Then I had to quit my coffee addiction, which was a lot easier to quit than cigarettes.

There's a great line in the movie Dead Again... There are two kinds of people, Smokers and Non-Smokers. Decide which one you are and be it.

Good luck!

Thing is, I'm actually a "smoker" type person, personality wise. The sort of guy who would have a cigarette going while writing, listening to music, shooting the shit. (Not while jogging though, that's just sad)

But I'm not an actual smoker in physical fact anymore.

Never had the desire to ever smoke. Never even took a puff untill I was really messed up at a party my junior year of college. But when I get really drunk and I mean really drunk, I'll smoke for some unknown reason. Usually, I don't remember doing it and somebody reminds me of it the next day. I've never smoked a cigerette sober.

the story of why I quit is pretty funny. Let's just say it involved HARSH chemicals and a newport...and pouring Dr. Pepper on my lips to get that goddamn menthol taste off of them.

one of my best friedns used to smoke 2 packs a day, easy.

then one time about 8 years ago we ate a shovel full of mushrooms and he smoked an entire marlboro medium backwards and didn't realize it until he went to stub out the butt. Of course then the vomiting started and he hasn't smoked a cigarette since then.

Those first few weeks are very hard. I reccomend becoming a stoner during this period, it helps immensely.

Addiction is something invented for little girls to make it seem like them not wanting to stop doing something that's fun isn't their fault. If you want to quit, you can quit.

First few weeks suck. Josh and I quit last year July 5th. During the first two months I snuck about 4 cigarettes. Each time I did I felt awful the next day.

So the last one I had was last september in NY. Two months later I got pregnant.

I don't miss them at all anymore. In fact the smell of them on other people makes me sick.

Plus I'm too scared to ever pick one back up again. The threat of lung cancer absolutely sucks.

Way to not poop your pants!

And you're right about the quitting. I like smoking too much though.

My wife said she was going to quit on her birthday (May 15), but that lasted all of two hours. She's been smoking for almost 30 years, so I'm guessing that's probably as close as she's gonna get. It makes me so frustrated, because I feel helpless to get her to stop and know it's eventually going to kill her. The only question that remains is will I die of a heart attack before she dies of cancer. Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen...

I'm on day four of no cigarettes. It's been pretty easy so far. I don't consider this really an attempt to quit, because sometimes I go months without feeling like smoking, then I'll get stressed over something and want a cig. Problem is, then I'm stuck with 19 more after I buy a pack. They need to sell them in different increments, 1-5-10.

You are supposed to bum 1 or 2.

Have you replaced the habit with something else like candy, or soda, or chewing on pens?
My buddy quit and he put on like 40 lbs from eating candy and garbage like that to keep his mind off it. He recently started smoking again and in an effort to hide it from his wife (not sure how this is possible) seems to smoke a lot less.

I hate asking people for cigarettes, especially from strangers. The time I really enjoyed a cigarette was the ride to work, and I've replaced it with bringing along bottled water. So I don't think I'll be gaining any weight.
