Just saw this posted on another site. Ben Roethlisberger got injured in a motorcycle accident. it sounds like he wasn't wearing a helmet and went head first into a cars windshield.

ESPN and Foxsports.com are confirming the story as well.

Not really a Steelers fan per se, but I do like Big Ben and several of their players.

Unlike the Kellen Winslow crash where I prayed for him to have permanent brain damage. :D

What are some of the reasons for not wearing a helmet? Especially on a motorcycle. I fail to see how not wearing one could be beneficial. I'm a slow bicyclist and I won't even ride for a block without one.

Roethlisberger was criticized in 2005 for not wearing a helmet, which was revealed after Browns tight end Kellen Winslow wrecked his crotch rocket and suffered a torn ACL and internal injuries.

Said Roethlisberger at the time: "I'm pretty conservative and laid back. I'll just continue to be careful. [W]e always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."

There's no indication that Roethlisberger was riding in a group on Monday morning.

pennsylvania actually repealed their helmet law a few years ago after motorcyclists complained. i still don't get it.

oh, and the pittsburgh board where i post is going mental over this. most of them are saying "what a dumbass" and some are like, "season ruined! call bubby brister."

I don't wish the man death or a career ending injury, but he is asking for it after the Winslow injury. If I was the Steelers and any other team, I'd start writing this into the contracts like they did for Jeff Kent's baseball contract.

but football, unlike baseball and other major professional sports, doesn't have guaranteed contracts. so i guess it works itself out if he can't play.

I would think teams would want to protect their interests and investments better.

i think situations like kellen winslow, jeff kent, and aaron boone have shown that they'll do these activities anyway.

Is it bad that the first thing I thought when I heard this was that the Super Bowl loser streak of bad luck continues? Yeah, yeah, I know that the Steelers won the game on the scoreboard....but that was just about the only place they won the game because statistically the Seahawks won most of the other categories....just sayin ;)

You guys are such dicks. You have no idea the pressures championship caliber Quarterbacks are under. It isn't easy to be us.

Much love, Ben. Much love.

This sounds like it isn't just career-threatening, but LIFE-threatening. I'm certainly no Steelers fan, but I like Big Ben. I hope he pulls through, even though I will agree that it's stupid to ride without a helmet.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger currently is undergoing surgery for injuries suffered in a Monday morning automobile accident.

Dr. Larry Jones of Mercy Hospital declined to offer any details regarding the nature of the surgery.

Roethlisberger is listed in serious but stable condition. Dr. Jones said that Roethlisberger was alert and talking before the commencement of the procedure.

Reporters on WTAE are speculating that Roethlisberger is having surgery to repair jaw injuries.

I bet he hit face first and then injured his legs upon striking the concrete, though he is big enough for his knees to catch the hood and his face to hit the windshield at nearly the same time.
That's being severely F'd up, and he wasn't too attractive to begin with.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is in serious but stable condition and in surgery this afternoon following a serious head injury this morning after his motorcycle collided with a car on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge, police said.
Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a nine-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and severely injured both of his knees when he hit the ground, police said.

A plastic surgeon has been summoned.

This is basically the same info that was given, but it is more detail.
