This guy just came to my apartment door with his daughter, making her apologize for throwing a rock at my car. With tears in her eyes, she mumbled, "The other kids told me to do it!" He scolded her again for that, saying it was no excuse. He gave me his card, told me where he lived and left.

Once I got a chance to go look at my car, I noticed it is a small dent that chipped away the paint in the middle of my hood. It's a '95 Buick that already has some dings and scrapes, because I use it as my every day driver while keeping my good car in the garage.

I'm leaning towards just telling the guy to forget about it because of his honesty. Should I make him pay for the damage, despite my lack of interest in this car?

Depends on whether the girl was adequately disciplined or not.

Nah. He did the right thing, and the car is 10 years old. I wouldn't sweat it.

Of course, I once got caught throwing rocks at cars, so I may be biased.

It certainly seemed like she was, considering he didn't let her get away with "They told me to do it" in her apology.

So it was a 10 year old car...Was the girl about 10 years old?

If so, i think an eye for an eye would be the Biblical thing to do.

I'm not saying you should tie her up and conduct a public stoning or anything for Chrissake, but a couple of well-placed rocks across the skull wouldn't do any harm.

Haha! I'd say she was about six or seven. If it had been my other car, I would have probably strangled her in front of her dad. But as far as the Buick goes, I don't really care what happens to it. On the other hand, he did offer to repair it...

Tell him all will be forgiven if he buys you a case of beer/bottle of booze.

I'd have a hard time asking this guy to fix the damage, since he did everything that I expect a responsible parent to do, and his kid was young enough to not completely understand her behaviour and the consequences. I think this guy did the right thing by his actions, and you should do him right by letting it drop, since the damage doesn't seem to be a big deal to you.

It's really nice to hear about a father stepping up and taking responsibility for his kid's behaviour, actually.

Take an IOU and say she can make it up to you, with interest, in about twelve years.

No kidding. I'm not even real pervy, I just felt like it was a statement that needed to be made.

Maybe a gift certificate to your favorite record store would alleviate some of the mental anguish?
