After spending a weekend being exposed to unlimited Howard Stern amongst all the other wonders of Sirius Satellite Radio, I am taking the plunge.....(i think)

my dad and I are in a debate over it though....

He says that since I live in NYC, and havea ton of buildings around me, and no southeast exposure to the sky (or whatever the rules say), i will get little to no service from my reciever.

btw, i am looking to get the mini boombox system, so i can sit it by a window if need be.

im kind of thinking that, Sirius (which is based out of NYC), would have been stupid and bad business muinded to not forsee a problem like this, and took the neccesary steps (no matter what they might be), to ensure that virtually anybody in NYC or major metroploitan city, can get sateliite radio (Sirius or XM)... There is just too many million potential clinets down the drain if they didnt find a way around it....

So, I dont know anybody in NYC who has either system, aso I cant ask them.....Anyone read anything, or know anything more in depth about my scenario? Am I fucked for living in NYC, or will I be fine for the most part?

In big cities, like NYC, they put repeaters on the ground, such that you have a strong signal even if you dont have a line of sight to satellite. I have driven through NYC with mine and no issues

I miss Howard, I should get Sirius already. I'm just worried about poor signal.

The only times I get poor signal are in heavily wooded areas, though I believe the newer units have better protection against this (i.e. bigger buffer)

When my dad signed up for XM, he got a second radio for free. He sent it to me, which I used in my apartment/Impala and it worked fine. Then I tried it in my Buick and I got zero signal. The Buick is what I drive the most, and what I need it in the most since it has no CD player. And if I buy a Sirius radio for $100 or so and it doesn't work, I'll be pissed.

zero signal is a setup problem...intermittent signal is what you should be afraid of.

Like I said, unless you live way out in the woods, you will have no issue

I've been all across the deepest darkest heart of the midwestern States and had nary a signal problem, and we have less Satellite coverage than the good ol NYC. My biggest problem is I've broken two radios in two and a half years. If you get a convertable system, have a professional permenantly install a docking system in your car, and leave the one hooked up to your home system alone in one permenant place as well. Pulling in on and of time and again will be the death of their receivers - trust me, I know!

Sirius either just launched or is preparing to launch a new satellite.

I want Sirius or XM to be integrated into my cell phone.

But until the units get smaller and better looking than my mp3 player, I probably won't get one.

From news:

According to our sources, here is what you can expect:

What to expect from the device commonly referred to as the SW100 or the Bellagio.
1. Expect a form factor similar to the S50 in terms of size.

2. Expect the unit to be equipped with an "internal" live antenna.

3. Expect the unit to be equipped with a headphone antenna.

4. Expect (similar to what Zing displayed) the unit to have WI-FI capability.

In simple terms, the unit will indeed be a live wearable without the use of WI-FI. The WI-FI gives added capability to the unit when someone goes into an office building gym, etc. The intent is for Sirius to be able to deliver the best sound quality in the maximum number of locations.

Rumors as to storage capacity have circulated, and Sirius subscribers should anticipate 2 GB of storage at a minimum, although this has not yet been confirmed.

Sirius Satellite Radio has indicated that this device is scheduled for release this summer.

Here is a link to the S50, for reference

Do they have Tivo for this stuff? Is that what you mean by 2gb storage?

If Bob and Tom get on one of these, I will be an instant subscriber.

Any tech nerds on the board who can point me towards an advance review of the new portable unit Sirius is putting out at the end of July? Their site doesnt say much, but two sources said, by end of July / early August, a kick ass ipod sized model will be available....

I guess since I started the thread...

I did buy Sirius with the boom box and I absolutely love it.

No reception problems at all in NYC, with the exception of when it rains (then it becomes intermittent).

Very happy with my decision!

Did they give you your subscription for free this month since Stern took the entire month off? Just curious.

I got to use my dad's Sirius receiver when I was back home. I thought it was the tops. I hope to get one in my next oldsmobuick.

Hah! I did get rather bummed, but as Howard described it....They get one additional week off then they did at K-Rock, and they decided to use that extra week during the summer. He promised little to no interuptions until holiday time....

and i may be OK with it, now cause he got his 23,000 hours of tapes back, i'd love to hear vintage shows rather then repeats of a week or two ago.

My next purchase:

Howard in Demand

My gf has it at her house and its awesome. Just like the 'E' show but with nudity, no editing, etc....makes it sooo much better.
