This guy is coming to town next month. I have a copy of the song "2002" from Radcliffe's Slowmonger Mix (by way of Loogar), and I really like it. How indicative is this particular song of his wider range of work? His short bio on the Rams Head site drops Neil Young & Paul Simon, and I'm not real sure what to think about that.

I'm sure he was samples on his own site, but I'm never up this fucking early and I'll get around to that later when I'm a little better suited for living.

I really don't know his solo stuff.
But if this is the same Bob Schneider that led The Apples In Stereo, definitely go.
He is a helluva songwriter and guitar player.
I loves me some Apples.

Appreciate the help, but this is the Bob Schneider based out of Austin. I didn't think about the AIS Schneider. Two different d00dz.

In that case, I have no idea.
Too many Bob Schneiders in the world.

I remember when Bob was in The Scabs here in Austin and they used to have songs like "Pussy Fever", "Sexy Pants", and, of course, "You Can't Polish a Turd But You Can Spray Paint it Gold".

They were awesome.

As for his new stuff - he plays around here all the time but I haven't seen him play live in ten years.

I was actually just listening to him last night.

I've never seen him live, but both of his discs are great listens all the way through. Umm, think Pete Yorn with more vigor, maybe. A little bit of blues, a tiny bit of funk. Generally, he's subtly eclectic, genre-wise, but it's all made on a bed of pop.

His albums are a bit hit-or-miss, but I've heard he's a great live act. He may be a kinda mellow singer/songwriter in his solo incarnation, but in concert he's usually with a full band and apt to pull songs from his, um, socially unacceptable days in the Scabs and the Ugly Americans. And he'll throw out a ton of covers if he's in the right mood.

The track from radcliffe's mix is from the album "Lonelyland" which is really quite good. That song is fairly representative of the album but maybe a little more mellow than most of them. I'd put that song in the bottom third in terms of qual personally.

I've always avoided him live for some reason. Maybe it's what radcliffe said about him pulling stuff from the ugly americans. I explored backward into their catalog and at least on record thought that they were pretty awful.

I've recently heard from a friend though that he's pretty great live. so what the hell go...how often do you get a good show that you don't have to drive to Baltimore or DC for? I know Ramshead has the occassional good show but its not like it happens once a week.

Yeh, I probably should've qualified that. A while ago I bought the Ugly Americans album because I figured "hey, it's Bob Schneider - how bad can it be?" Answer: Reeeeally fucking bad. Smirking cheesy porno funk.

But like I said, people say he pulls it off live. I'd go check him out for sure.

I'm gonna make an honest attempt to get my work schedule, but I'm gonna have to sit tight for a week or two until some of these deadbeats pay me my gotdamn money.

Thanks, gang.

I like Rams Head, but it gets really pricey really quickly. $70 shows are pretty routine in that fucker.

His first album was great, his second...not so much. SP's description is pretty spot-on.

I've only heard the track he had on the Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back soundtrack but it wouldn't draw up comparisons to any of the other artists mentioned in this thread.

Damn skippy, I'm printing that and tacking it on my wall. I was just proud of myself for finally typing more than 'I like it'.

I agree with the first one being better, definitely more filler in the second, but still a good listen and I know because you burned it for me.
