So my brand spankin' new laptop came in today, and I'm going to fool around tonight installing the necessary and beneficial software I need on it. Throw out anything--especially freeware--you guys like to use, find to be damn helpful or things like that. So far, I've started with:

Firefox (duhrr)
VLC Media Player

I'm about to purchase the Avast Pro, since I'm an honest fella.

I'm a PC guy, 'gurt. A pariah in the design world.

Not a pariah but a brave soul. Doesn't make too much difference anymore does it? All adobe apps are the same for both now anyway.

have fun with it!

Bless you. I'm glad other people, especially designers realize they are pretty much the same these days.

I've never used Open Office, but is there really a need or special advantage if I already have this monster MS Suite? I've always been curious, but more lazy.

eh, maybe not. i don't have the suite so i found it really useful, but only for really boring stuff, like pretending to make a spreadsheet or something.

There is no need if you have Office, but there is usually no need to buy Office if you have OpenOffice. It's a little shoddier, but has all of the basic functionality.

That's what I thought, but as I said, always too lazy to actually try it.

I fucking hate spreadsheets.

At this point I'd try ANYTHING other than Word for creating documents at work. I've been having so many stupid issues the last couple days...

I almost caused a "scene" yesterday.

You mean a support site where you can get help if it's not working? Or just someplace to download it? You can download it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/

word perfect doesn't run with windows so well.

I've heard from several network administrators that it messes up security and crap because windows sucks, so they won't allow it on any machines.

if you are a LaTex person, then TexnicCenter is good.

I also like 'Personal Brain' for organization

Agent Ransack for a search program

and a bunch already listed above

Word Pefect does get weird sometimes, but saving and restarting the program always seems to work fine (for WP 9). I just started using WP 12, and haven't had any problems yet.

The "reveal codes" option (allows you to see all the formatting crap in line with text) is the greatest thing ever and IMO makes up for any weirdness with windows.

The only downside is when you get a word doc for someone else, it's difficult to translate it into WP, and you're stuck using crappy Word.
