i'm kinda curious why you would even bother checking the new disc out then. I'm not saying that they aren't worth checking out, I'm a fan but if you're not one yet....

not meaning to single you out, but i wonder when i see statements like that. i get the impression that lots of people feel the need to check everything new with any buzz out and it just seems that doing so would really eat into your time to listen to stuff you already know you like or would probably have great reason to believe that you might like.

i haven't heard the new one yet. But I think Murray street was the best thing that they've done since Daydream Nation so I have nothing against their recent releases. I'm sure I'll pick this up eventually.

This album is to indie rock what Paul Simon's "Surprise" is to dad rock. Getting old and melancholic.

I really like the Kim songs.

I wouldn't want to miss out on something great because I didn't like previous albums. take Nada Surf for example. First album = crap, but Let Go = brilliant. Radiohead, Pablo Honey = crap, but rest gets better. Just because a band puts out something that I don't like doesn't mean I should dismiss future releases. The arguement swings the other way too. Crystal Method - Vegas = beyond brilliant, but Tweekend was only pretty good and the newer is only ok. I keep buying stuff from them hoping for greatness since they have done it before, they can do it again.

P.S. Ya'll are welcome for the music related topic. ;)

Even EVOL isn't very dissonant. The two noisest releases are Confusion is Sex and Bad Moon Rising, and in my opinion those are easily the band's two best releases. I don't know if it's a coincidence though.

Really? I thought the lyrics were pretty cringe-worthy.

Not that i really agree with your examples but its one thing to not completely dismiss a band based on their debut album and its another thing entirely to want to hear the new album from a band that's been recording for about 25 years if you've never liked their earlier stuff.

I hear ya billy..you come at music from a different angle than a lot of people here. Some people just feel compelled to hear EVERYTHING.

I have no desire to hear this, cos SY has, right or wrong, never been a band I liked or paid any attention to.

I guess there is a difference with a 2nd or 3rd release as compared to 20th.

I'm going to balk at that statement, which seems to be getting some milage as of late. Goo is by no means drenched in feedback and sludge. Do people even listen to their earlier recordings?

Fair enough. Goo kind of balanced the EVOL/Sister style sludge with accessible songwriting, like the new album. I guess I like the noisy end of their "pop" records.

i dont mind you calling me out. i am weird sometimes with music. this new album could have made me "see the light" and got me into their back catalog.

also:
any new big release i will check out - you just never know.

Is it a surprise to anyone that the folks who like stuff like animal collective and that elk don't find Sonic Youth's more mainstream effort sgood?

So you're saying that it makes sense that people who like "weird" music don't like when a formerly "weird" band does something more straightforward?

I suppose that would make sense, but I like a lot of SY's more accessible stuff. The new album seemed OK based on one listen, and I'll probably buy it. Seems better than Sonic Nurse, as people have said, and at this point, any new Sonic Youth that is reasonably good is pretty much a bonus.

Most of SY's stuff with maybe the exception of Daydream Nation, Goo and Dirty isn't very immediate. I wouldn't expect that alot of their work would make a huge initial impression on even fans. This is particularly true of recent, more mellow album. Its over time that the melodies and layers sink in. I liked Murray Street alot more 6 months after purchase than I did first listen and its staying power has been a lot stronger than most of my favorites from that year. So you're kind of stuck where unless you invest the time and repeat listens, you're probably not going to be very impressed. But given your general low level of interest in the band, they probably aren't really worth you making that sort of time investment.

Liked Murray Street a lot... and so far I think this is better. They aren't getting old and tired.... they were melancholy in 1986 and they're melancholy in 2006.

Did you guys get the tracks 'Helen Lundeburg' and 'Eyeliner'? They are listed as UK bonus tracks so I'd imagine not.

Anyway the point is they are better than some of the tracks on the album 'proper'.

iTunes has a bonus track with the album. I downloaded it last night but my crapped-out car stereo wouldn't work this morning so I still haven't heard it.
