Is there a good place to begin? Should I even bother?

I was just thinking about this the other day. I went to all music but the guy's got so many albums it's hard to know where to begin.

I don't want to start with a greatest hits or compilation. I'd rather check out a regular album.

For most people, Freak Out is probaby the best Zappa entry point.

For juice, it's probably the anus.

One Size Fits All might be a good place to start.

But I'm also the only guy in this thread actually looking out for your listening pleasure.

Hot Rats is a mostly instrumental album, lotsa jazz-rock fusion that shows off Zappa's virtuosity. It's NOT a good place for a Zappa newbie to start.

Go with Freak Out - it's the Mothers debut, it's sorta pop song oriented - but it also incorporates all the satire, sound collage, and avant garde moves that Zappa became known for.

these are the only two that i have and i got them on the same day. So i can say with assurance that "hot rats" IS agood entry point.

and i don't really like "Freak Out" too much. I don't dislike it, but it didn't grab me the same way.

I will pretty much agree with everyone at once and say that both Freak Out and Hot Rats are good entry points, each being a solid example of two very different aspects of his music.

I somehow suspect that you'd like Joe's Garage, Acts I-III so I guess that's my answer.

In general though, I don't think there's one good introduction to him and I don't think anyone could totally write him off if they don't like any one particular album by him. I'm not a huge fan though so I'm don't mean that to be encouraging anyone to go out and buy a lot of Zappa albums.

I'll undoubtedly get shouted down and pelted with rocks and garbage for this, but if you've never heard anything by Zappa before, your best starting point is probably the single-disc compilation titled Strictly Commercial. That would give you the best idea of which Zappa sound/style you prefer, and help you determine which of this albums to get.

I started with Sheik Yerbouti. I haven't really gone much further beyond a few compilations from friends, but damn that CD has some catchy songs on it. "Flakes" and "Broken Hearts are for Assholes" make it worth the price alone.

Just get the Stricly Commercial "Best Of". My favorite two records are Hot Rats and Apostrophe. Both albums are Franktastic.
