My Dad works for the DA so I haven't paid a speeding ticket in forever. But the first time I got one (I was probably 19), my dad threw me against the wall and yelled every curse word I know and some that I didn't. I seriously thought he was gonna beat me but he didn't and two hours later he was fine. Now, he doesn't really care so much when I call him to see if he can fix my ticket.

damn, what's going to happen to you when a real problem comes up? tickets suck, especially the shock of getting your first, but man it's just a speeding ticket. it's kinda like a big zit.

And I couldn't go fight it because I had to start student teaching.

i can appreciate that. i remember i got pretty freaked out w/ my first ticket at 17. but really, it's not the end of the world. doing that driving class thing sucks, but it's necessary to keep that off your record. i've been through it a few time3s.

will my insurance still go up if i do driving class? i'm definitely going to court and doing the class and everything so it'll come off my record or whatever. but i just feel bad because my parents always coined me as the one who never gives them a problem and they always tell me that. and here i've gotten a speeding ticket.

If that's the most trouble you've caused your parents then they should feel pretty fucking lucky....unless they're complete douche bags.

In actuality, if you turn in a certificate showing you took the class to your insurance it should be good for a 10% discount (at least it is in Texas).

One ticket on your record isn't going to hurt so much, but if it becomes a pattern then you have the likelihood of getting dropped from your insurance or have high premiums because they put you into a "high risk" category.

Your parents will get over it, if not sooner then later. It happens and life goes on.

my sister got a speeding ticket. i think it was 20 mph over.
my brother has gotten a ticket before. it was 20 mph over in a school zone. he also just got into a car accident which was his fault a few weeks ago. so he's going to court for that.

now i get a ticket. i guess i'm not looking that bad.

How old are you? 18, right? I had 6 speeding tickets under my belt by that age (I started driving at 16). It's not that big of a deal. Try getting two in ONE DAY, one in South Carolina and one in Georgia. I now have 11 speeding tickets total, but haven't received one in about 4 years now (knock on wood).
After my 9th ticket, State of Georgia required me to take a defensive driving course in order to knock two points off of my license. I took that course, and although it sucked, I finally learned some valuable lessons and slowed down. Most important lesson: DON'T DRIVE IN THE FAST LANE ON THE INTERSTATE... COPS ALWAYS POINT THEIR SPEED DETECTION AT THAT LANE.


Oh, and if you're still worried, don't be, because it won't be any worse than a sentence I received for going 90 in a 60 on I-16 in Treutlen Co., Georgia Freshman year of college on the way back to Athens from the GA/FL game in Jacksonville... I DID have to go to court for this one. My sentence was a $350 fine, 100 hours of community service and 6 months probation. I paid the fine and did 42 hours, then one day when I called my probation officer, his assistant informed me that the case had been closed. I found out later that an uncle of a friend in Dublin, GA had looked into my case and found that the sentence was too stiff for the crime, so they were forced to drop it. Just so happens that the friend's family owns half of the county and the city of Soperton.

yeah and i always keep an eye out but it was night, and i was in the slow lane the majority of the drive but then i got behind these slow oldsmobile and it was driving me crazy.

Cemetary. Your insurance shouldn't go up. If it does it will be miniscule. My understanding of how VA does this is that if you complete the course, the ticket gets dropped and is not on your record. You'll have to ask the judge in regards to that though. If your ticket is dropped, then it is not a conviction. In that case your insurance won't hear about it, even if they do a search. Also, from my understanding, most insurance companies don't even do searched but once like every two years. In that case, you may be on your own insurance and it won't even matter.

What insurance do you have? I have Geico and they are the breast. I didn't experience any insurance surcharges for the tickets I got when I was your age under my parent's insurance and they were just as bad.

41 in a 30 = $200 + 2 points

45 in a 35 = $200 + 2 points

i told my parents. they just bitched about insurance and having to go to court with me because i got it while i'm a minor (i turn 18 this monday).
then we changed the subject and they treated me as they always do.

I drive the speed limit and find it to be an oddly rewarding challenge. Seriously, I had to make a game out of it a few years back when I was (1) driving under the influence too often and (2) driving with an expired registration sticker. Now I drive 55 all the fucking time...it's kinda hysterical.

However, I used to go 90 whenever possible (particularly in Colorado and Texas), but I dunno...getting somewhere "faster" by going 20 miles+ over the speed limit really doesn't do much good. To significantly improve your arrival time by increasing your driving speed, you've have to double, even triple your speed (a la German Autobahn). That's frankly not an option, so why bother? It's just not worth it.

THere are a couple roads near where I live that if you attempted to go the speed limit you would be the cause of a huge accident. Sometimes you gotta speed. At least when everyone else is. Going the speed limit for me has come to mean to me that I go the same general speed as everyone else on the road. So, if everyone just decided to drive 80mph everywhere, then no one would get pulled over.

On the 101 near San Jose the posted speed is 65. But, everyone is going 80. Seriously, if you were to 65 you would get into an accident.

Well, I'm not an unreasonable guy. If the flow of traffic puts everyone 5-10 mph above the limit, I'm pretty sure I know how to respond.

But, in the end, the compulsion to drive faster, push the limit, etc...other than the mere thrill of speed (which I get and love and am probably too addicted to for my own good/longevity), why the hell do we need to get places *faster* all the time? Really, you'd need to up the driving speed by such a factor that our roads and equipment currently cannot support, and even if you could increase your speed by 20-30%, you're what, still saving maybe 20, 30 minutes tops?

Well, I can see that in the day to day kind of driving. I agree. It seems ridiculous to just go crazy and speed because at most I have noticed people arriving like 15 seconds before I do. Not that big of a deal.

However, going 75 or 80 on a trip across country saves you a TON of time. It's just more expensive.

If it is 3600 miles across country (in general) going 80 across country gets you in 15 hours faster than going 60. Almost a full day of driving, if those were average speeds.
