So I went to a wedding over the weekend. Very nice, very tasteful, no crazy over-done stuff, just a celebration of love out in the country.
But... good lord was the music awful!!

This seems to be the case at every wedding unless the bride & groom are music-obsessives and/or musicians. At one point I turned to my brother and said: "If I ever get married I will ask you to be the DJ and there will be none of this crap."

Now I'm not the type of gal to get wrapped up in dreams of a possible future wedding, etc. But I can tell you right now that if it happens one day... NO ONE WILL PLAY "BROWN EYED GIRL".
Or cheesy 50s tunes, or Chumbawamba, or U2 dance remixes, no sir.

So on that note I figured I'd see if the giant music-brain of Obner could generate some actually GOOD wedding music. ...Not that I'm planning or anything... just curious what yah'll have done to combat the serious issue of bad wedding music. It's like a disease.

My contributions:

"Breathless" - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
"Sweet Thing" - Van Morrison (see I actually love the guy, but the cliche has been done to death)

(The only song they played that I liked was "Galang Galang" by MIA)

our "wedding song" = northern sky by nick drake

other than that, we had a pretty decent band playing some old motown/soul tunes....

In all seriousness, I am not sure what music to play at the reception. But, I would love to have Sunset Drama King by The Appleseed Cast play when "she" walks down the aisle. However, I know that I have no say whatsoever in that. I just think it would be awesome.

my best friend was just married in may.

they put all the tunes together in an ipod playlist....
(i overheard her husband's 18 year old cousin on her cellphone telling a friend it was the coolest wedding music ever. complete with belle and sebastian, the postal service, death cab, etc.)

i'll see if i can get a copy of that playlist if you'd like.

At my wedding we had the DJ play lots of Motown. Can't go wrong with Motown.
And a wonderful moment was created when my mom and mother-in-law took over the dance floor when the marched together to:
"(I would Be) 500 Miles" by The Proclaimers.

But our wedding dance was to:
"You're The One For Me" - Jonathan Richman

Music was generally good.
Although, like at any wedding where at least one of the marrieds is Jewish, we HAD to dance to "Havah Nagila"!

Oh, sounds good, I'm not actually planning on getting married or anything...thanks though. It's more like that as a music snob I am upset by the sheer nastiness of most wedding music. It was the only bad thing at an otherwise beautiful wedding (and I'm not even into wedding) and it just left me feeling sad that people can have nicer music at such an important event.

I just knew you guys would restore my faith that SOME people feel the need for good music at important life events.

The problem is, even if YOU are into music, your guests may not be. Not everyone wants to hear Wolf Eyes ;)

I wanted Bloor to MC/DJ ours like he did for our friend "AAAAAAHHH" but for some reason FEMGAR is wary of having Bobo the Simpleminded rockin the mic.

one of my good friends from college was married last year and asked me to bring some records after inviting me as a guest. i thought it was a really nice gesture to invite me as a guest first because i didn't want to have to be stuck behind a deck all night when everyone i knew from school would be there. four different people ended up contributing to the music and gear. as it turned out, there was a technical problem and we ended up dj'ing off of cassette tapes. it was a great time.

an ex-girlfriend's best friend asked me to dj her wedding this fall and i recently had to pull out of it because of her startling requests. she asked me initially because she said music was really important and knew my tastes well, but then she started asking me to play standard wedding fare. so i just said the distance wouldn't work. (eight hours one way? no, thanks.)

As an aside:

Good grief... this thread constitutes my first official foreray into having any interest whatsoever in weddings. Is it because I turned 30? Is it all over now?

I'm getting married in the fall and we're just having a three-piece band play for most of the reception. For their breaks, we'll put in a CD with some good songs but not much for people to dance to. The best receptions I've been to had Harry Connick or some other jazzy type music, rather than the standard wedding songs.

Teenage Fanclub has some good songs for weddings, Bob Dylan has a couple, if you go through your collection you'll find some but if you want songs people can dance to, it's a little more challenging.
