The Los Angeles Times today leads with administration officials rolling out a presidential decision to declare a 1,400-mile long swath of ocean around northern Hawaii a national monument, making it the world's biggest marine reserve.

The area now protected around Hawaii—where commercial fishing will soon be banned—is larger than all national parks put together, and the move is a big reversal for the administration. Five years ago, the White House "considered stripping" the area of some protections. The LAT says Bush got excited by the reserve idea after watching a film by Jacques Cousteau's son. The NYT has a cool slideshow of the area.

can't you just see him watching a nature movie like a little kid and thinking "wow, there's a whole ocean out there" . . . . jackass.

So…
Pushing for drilling in ANWR = jackass.
Refusing to assemble support to ratify Kyoto = jackass.
Reverses position on stripping environmental regulations with the intent of preserving even a small portion of the planet the administration is accused of being hell-bent on destroying = jackass.

I think it's a good idea. Unfortunately Bush ideas often resemble a headstrong 5-year old who doesn't want to get off his new bike at suppertime. The bike is really cool, but the kid is still five and it's still suppertime.

Shit like this really pisses me off. I'm currently living on the greatest loss of land in the ENTIRE WORLD which is home to the LARGEST bird sanctuary in North America and countless other animals that risk extinction in North America and we can't get the Feds to do anything. All other risk to the enviroment seem distant to me and this seems extremely real and immediate. We're talking like 20 years here and it's all gone. REAL shit that we'll not only effect animials and the enviroment but also the pocket book of America.

I first thought this was going to be something like the Army reserves, and was going to ask something about how I wondered why we didn't have reserve Marines.

I think Bush was already asked by the media if he'd watch an "An Inconvenient Truth," and he said something like "Not likely."
