I recently bought one about 2 months ago and I love it. The first camera I have actually ever bought that wasn't a disposable.

A camera has to be able extremely portable for me to take it places. If is big enough to be uncomfortable in my pocket I won't take it with me.

I bought this one because it's super versatile, very small and compact, and it has a nice big view screen.

Image

It has tons of options, B&W pics, Siena pics, time lapse stuff, rapid shooting where it takes 4-5 pictures in 3-4 seconds, red eye reduction, and a bunch of other shit I'll never use.

I mostly only take drunken revelry pics.

if you're not sure of what you're looking for, go to calumet on 19th street (between 5th and 6th ave) and speak to Ron. he's one of the sales people there and he's super cool. he could give you some advice on what might work for you. :D

thanks, tt, i know that place. i work about 2 blocks away, and actually i'm working right across the street from alkit. theyre the ones who do my developing [well, color anyhow, they send out the b7W] and scanning for me.

Im assuming you know B&H as well.. Both places are great for mailorder and if you go in knowing what you want.. and understand the NYC attitude.. otherwise, you may pick up a murder charge along with a camera

thanks for all the info.
i am going to consider multiple options, including and especially an earlier suggestion about keeping an extra body with color film in it for when i want to switch back & forth. i really hadnt ever considered this before, figuring it would be expensive to maintain 2 cameras at once.
but i looked on ebay and the camera i have now is literally starting at around 20 bucks, which i guess shouldnt surprise me since it's a) 20 years old and b) a fuji stx-2. not exactly a top seller, i guess.
but, i've shot all my photos with it thus far and have no complaints, so i guess why worry?

In general the price of cameras are going down- way down- its unbelievable from about 2 years ago. I mean, I can purchase my camera body from B&H used with a 9 rating for 100 bucks. Nikon almost entirely getting out of the analog camera business seemed like a death knell. Talking to camera shop and developing studios is depressing.. poor people.

Anyhow, good luck

they should start providing printing services for digital cameras. there's a shop in hollywood that started doing that once digital came in. they have this huge ass machine that prints out photo quality images from digital. and the photos look nice, not like cheap printer quality photos.

and of course they do.. but the point is, compare to 15 years ago, when taking a photo meant having it printed up by a lab.. to today where taking a photo probably means it sits on someones harddrive or website, and perhaps they print it out on their printer and maybe just maybe have it printed up but at Walmart.

Anyhow, I think they would have to be crazy NOT to provide digital services.. still doesnt look good though.

kt images on las palmas, just north of santa monica blvd. i used to have to go there when i was shooting slide film for my old company. i was one of the last people who finally went digital, so i saw how they adapted to the change over. i think they're doing well now, but that was a year ago, so i don't really know.

ok, so i totally compromised. instead of trying to find a digital to do everything, i decided to get a point and shoot with *some* manual options on it, just for those times i'm feeling like it, and going to continue using film for the more *serious* stuff [things i really want to make prints of].. i think it's a decent compromise.
i bought this:

and by the way, tt, thanks for recommending calumet [that was you, right?]
they're my new fave shop in nyc.

Don't forget that when shooting b&w, you should use filters (either red or yellow) to obtain sharper images.

I disagree with this a lot.. A LOT I SAY.

Never use filters unless you know why.. red/yellow filters will do more than 'sharpen'your image (and only sharpen if/when it is doing its job right). Even though the images might come out B&W, using color filters will effect the grayscale values of the objects. I.e. can make red stand out or fade into green.

But carry on, I love the look of a red filter on a lense.

EDIT: and that was my 1000th post. Jesus, I thought Ive been here longer than that.

filters aren't going to sharpen your image at all - they'll degrade the quality of it though - sticking anything over the front element is just creating another barrier that the light can (and will) be distorted through. never buy the cheapest filter available - go for one of the better brands (b+w, hoya hmc super, etc). the red and yellow filters are used for increasing contrast in certain scenes. those two are usually used for darkening skies, making the clouds pop out.

if you're worried about switching from color to b&w midway through a roll just buy a leader puller and write the frame count on the canister.
