I think you may be right.

But the rock band part is especially fun.

The only other Replacements albums eMuisc has (besides "Let it Be") are "Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash" and "Hootenany." I'm hoping I can stumble upon a used bin like you did to get "Tim" and "Pleased to Meet Me" before deciding if I want to become a Replacements completist.

I got 'em all except for Sorry Ma.... I definitely feel a Replacements bender coming on this week. I will use Timis' ysi as the jump off point.
I like them all, even the mellower ones near the end. Initially they were kind of disappointing but I've come to appreciate them.

I think my entry point was the two-disc All for Nothing, Nothing for All. It only includes the Sire years and forward, so none of the Twin Tone stuff is on it (Sorry, Ma, Stink, Hootenanny, Let It Be).

However, disc two is the stuff that was left off the original official albums, including the Tim version of "Can't Hardly Wait" (sans horns and much grittier); a handful of covers: "Another Girl, Another Planet" and "Like a Rolling Pin" with some other typical Replacements hit-or-miss tracks like "Beer for Breakfast", "Portland" and "Date to Church" (is that Tom Waits I hear?).

Amazon has a used copy for $9. I think it also has some video on the cd, so you can see The Mats in all their unparalleled MTV glory.

As far as proper albums, Tim is my favorite, and I was really enjoying Let it Be just a few days ago. Pleased to Meet Me is both a little spotty and little shiny for my tastes, but I'm also an out of the closet Don't Tell A Soul fan, though it sounds pretty dated.

This is a band that I like, but will never, for the life of me, be able to figure out why they are in the pantheon. I guess I was too young in the 80s, but there just isn't the same grab like when I heard other raved about bands (Pixies, The Dolls) that I had missed the first boat on.

I'm with LooGAR, as odd as that seems. I have a long history of liking Mats-inspired bands, but Tim (my only Mats album) is maybe a 7 for me.

With The Replacements, it's not about the sound.
It's just classic, excellent songwriting.

It's the song, not the sound. That's probably why a lot of the indie kids just don't "get" why they are these Indie heroes. Indie is all about the sound these days. A great song is just a bonus.

Three things:

1. I'm always surprised that Loogs doesn't LOVE the Mats. I mean I can't think of a band more like the Stones but not ripping them off. Seems like a perfect fit.

2. Tim is my favorite(despite some awful production) and I find Let It Be a little overrated. On the flip side I think Hootenanny is underrated.

3. I apperciate what Verbal Intercourse/Blue Milk brings to the Obner Table. He's young, cocky and thinks he knows everything, and he's not afraid to shine some light on some stuff even it's misunderstood or misguided. There's always a little bit of truth hidden in what he says under the bravo and teenage stupidity if that makes sense. Also his perception of music is refreshing on a board full of mostly late 20's and 30 somethings.

I think it has more to do with historical context. The Mats came about at a time when they just didn't have alot of peers and it resonated with some of the youth of that time. And some of those youth happened to start bands. Luck? Who knows.

The fact that people still discover them, whether it's through name dropping by bands, magazines, message boards, is some kind of testament to their importance, and although people seem to have mixed reactions, that's a testament to at least some of their songwriting.

I know they liked the Rolling Stones and all, but if you think that the influence comes out in their music then you haven't listened to enough Stones.

it's like Harry Monster told me one time: "Where's the BALLS in this?"

I think they sink under the weight of expectations at this point...but I bet they have an awesome greatest hits collection.

I can agree with that statementif you've only listened to Tim on, but early 'mats are one of the ballsiest bands of all time.

There's Stones similarities, but no more than any other straight up rock band. They're a tad polished for that.

BALLS = Westerberg screaming his heart & guts out on "Unsatisifed".

I listened to "Let It Be" for the first time in a long time last nite, & that song still gives me chills, 22 years later.

I gotta say this is my early favorite. Pretty repetitive tune but I love the way he sings it.

I found another bad song in addition to "Gary's Got a Boner." "Answering Machine" is pretty lame, I must have missed it the first 6-7 times through. The fact that the recording used for the song is the "number is disconnected" message makes it sort of funny, though.
