so. i'm probably moving to new york at the end of the summer, and i recently started emailing with a girl i went to high school with about getting a job with her company. she seemed very enthusiastic, and told me to send my resume to her boss ASAP (don't worry about updating, just send it, etc.) i sent it a week ago and have heard nothing back from either of them.

now, that's not a big deal, i'm patient, except that i'll be in new york monday and tuesday of next week and it'd be great if i could get at least an interview out of the trip. so i sent this dude a follow up email just saying, 'hey, i'll be in town, let's talk.'

the question is- why do i feel so weird about doing that? why do i feel as though i'm being pushy? i don't want to put anyone off, even though i realize this is how it's done.

any thoughts or concerns are greatly appreciated.

i don't think that's off-putting at all. in fact, it makes you sound very interested in the job, which is good.

you followed up, not sit back and wait for the response.

good luck to ya ficks!

Yeah, I don't see a problem with this.

I think it was the right thing to do- you gave new information (i.e. you will be in town) that would this person would like to know if they were interested in hiring you. So now the ball is in their court

I used to be so shy about that kind of thing---I still am really---but time and time again people have told me that doign followups is a really good thing when you're looking for a job. Obviously there's a way of over-doing it (which it doesn't sound like you're doing at all). But in general it shows that you're interested and motivated and on top of things in your life.

The fact that you're going to be in town aand telling them that is also a good thing. It shows that although you haven't moved yet you are already taking care of stuff there and that coming in for an interview at some other time might not be a big deal.

This coming from someone who recently moved cities too.

Good luck. :)

I have a problem with re-acquainting yourself with a high-school mate, with whom you havn't communicated in years, solely for the purpose of getting a job. It's very predictable, though.

her mom ran into mine at the grocery store and suggested i email her about her company, who happened to be hiring.

i guess i don't have a huge problem with the whole thing, it's just always something i've felt a little weird about.

When I did exactly this with a company in Denver, it led to a second interview and eventual job offer. I accepted and have been with the company for over eight years and two buyouts.

One thing I KNOW, is that you will not get the job if you don't ask.

this is a job beggar mentality. a better way of thinking is that you're going to make her look good when the company remembers that she is the one who referred you.
