WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House voted Thursday to cut taxes on inherited estates and relieve thousands of heirs from paying tax collectors beginning next decade.

Republicans temporarily set aside their ambition to abolish the tax. Instead, they voted to exempt from taxation individual estates up to $5 million and couple's estates up to $10 million, while also easing the impact on even richer families. The vote was 269-156.

The White House called the bill "a step in the right direction." The compromise measure now goes to the Senate.

President Bush and Republicans in Congress have long pressed to abolish the estate tax, contending it is unfair to tax businesses and farms left to the next generation.

"Americans are being taxed almost every moment of their lives. My goodness, when they are dead, do we have to tax them again?" said House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

Democrats argued that it is more unfair to give millionaires a tax cut while denying thousands of poor workers a higher minimum wage.

And the astonishing trick of all this, is that the Republicans have convinced the middle and lower middle classes that elect them that somehow this is in their interest. The dismantling of the American middle class continues with the middle class' complicity. Fries with that? Pepsi OK?

americans have always had a strong belief in an extremely strong right to property - maybe there was some inroads for a few years there in the 1960s, but not much. i understand some of that feeling but there comes a point where it becomes ridiculous. especially when we are expanding government at the same time.

More than the 1960's.... the New Deal through the Reagan years... and these "all-American paradigms" of fair play, a helping hand, letting every one have a chance at property... was not seen as contradictory to private property. This is when the middle class was created. Johnson actually said in a state of the union "take from the haves and give to the havenots" and this was American as apple pie. The Reagan Revolution was to encourage the middle and lower classes that somehow these paradigms were antithetical to their own interests. Plenty of statistics showing the middle three quintiles of the American public have lost ground since then... and increasingly falling behind since 2001.

If i wasnt from northern Maine i would move to Canada, but screw that shit, i'll deal with this. Nice to know that my nonexistent estate would have less taxes taken out of it.
:D
Canadians at the border are eating this administration, they're making a killing in the exchange rate lately. :

Yes. That guy nails it. It's so clear that people are voting opposite their benefit. Discouraging. That book was depressing.

In terms of civics, I understand the 'death tax' but rationally, it makes little sense to me. Why should I pay taxes on money that has already been and will continually to be taxed annually anyway (who cares *who* is paying the taxes)? So that I can support a bloated government who fights wars at will? I think estate tax is ridiculous- regardless of the fact that sure it will benefit certain people more than others. That is besides the point to me.

nah it all fits into the same system I think..

Big Business keeps more of its money for profits instead of wages,

and then when they die, their kids keep more of their money..

Yeah, I just saw this...That book is the biggest whiny piece of shit I have ever laid my eyes on. Wah, wah, wah...we went from Republican to more Republican.

Not one word is about a solution. NOT ONE WORD, and it is symptomatic of everything that is wrong with Democrats.

And yeah, Johnson said all that shit, Harry, and he started us down this road. For better or for worse, the right has changed the paradigm, framed the debate, whatever you want to call it.

You either have to change it back, or learn to play on that turf. What doesn't help is Sub Z-Grade pussies like Frank telling us how terrible his state is.

Fuck, he's from there, he should understand how to talk to the people "at the arbors and the forks of the creeks."

loog is right about that book.

i haven't read it because i know what it does...whine about how the Republicans are better at politics.

I can't stand listening to John Kerry at all because all he does is fucking whine and never offers a solution.

It's a shame that the only solutions this country has are offered by neocons.

thanks for that link, cause it led me to this:

The Superficial Wrote:
During a private concert by Prince at Butter last Friday, Lindsay Lohan got out of her seat to argue with Paris Hilton over Stavros Niarchos and when she returned to her table saw that P. Diddy and his posse had started sharing it. When she refused to share and began arguing with P. Diddy his bodyguards came over and took her out of the club.

"There were only like six tables," a witness says. "Everyone was sharing, but Lindsay refused and began mixing it up with Puffy. His bodyguards came over and picked Lindsay up to get her out." A member of Diddy's camp confirmed, "Lindsay was being so loud and obnoxious. His security became concerned and came over to escort her away."

That's what you get for being a racist and refusing to share your table with black people. She should be thankful they didn't throw fried chicken at her and start hitting her with their humongous penises. Because that's what she deserves for being an ignorant racist. Now if you'll excuse me I have to drive to work and hope there aren't any Asians on the road.

on the same site.

Note to f4df: So that I can support a government who makes public education possible, makes sure that a college is in the reach of everyone, who maintains roads, who perhaps could even address issues of hunger, poverty, lack of health care.

Note to Senator: I thought Frank certainly did imply a solution... to make clear to those voters who were voting against their interest, what would be best for them and their children economically and as far as quality of life is concerned. Republicans "whine" successufly about abortion and gay marriage while the middle class disappears. And it is ethical obligation of free citizens in democratice critical dialogue to struggle over the paradigms of our values and needs.

Hmmm.. considering that there is an estate tax NOW and those things are not part of the agenda makes me very skeptical that they would be simply by *keeping* the tax. If that is the case, write it into law.. i.e. estate tax income goes directly to such programs.

College is ridiculous, and it is in reach of everyone - that is the problem

I sometimes wonder if libs think that a dollar left in the hands of a private citizen is going to get sewn into their mattress where it can't possibly do any good unless freed by taxes to be spent more wisely by govt bureaucrats.

If we want to solve "the hunger problem," why don't we just pass a law requiring anyone above a certain income or wealth level to have with them at all times a cooler full of delicious ham sandwichs which they are required to share with anyone who appears to be hungry. It couldn't be less effective than the tax & spend programs in effect or being pushed by libs.
