I am looking to get some fishing "gear". However, I know NOTHING about it. What kind of rod should I get? Does that depend on what type of fish you're looking to catch in the same way that the lure or bait is important? Are there any brand names you all would suggest? I am not looking to get top of the line because I can't afford anything like that, but I am looking for like the Martin Guitar of fishing equipment. Are the push-button rods/reels lame and childish? Gimme some help.

I can't help you, but I love fishing.

are you lake fishing or ocean fishing? big fish or little fish? Fishing line comes in different weights, so you'll have to figure that out. Get a sturdy rod because you don't want something flimsy that's going to break when you catch a big'n.

As for bait, if I'm lake fishing, I use worms and that's that. If I'm ocean fishing, I use shrimp or squid.

Yeah, it all depends on what kind of fishing. Shimano makes good reels though.

I am actually going to be fishing in a river with ocean sea life. haha. It's the Elizabeth river and it is either salt water or brackish. I can't remember. But, right now the fish are croaker and in the fall they are striper bass, which I am excited about. It was pretty cool. When I was fishing the other day, I knew I was on a river but I forget the salt water aspect and so all of a sudden a sting ray pops up on the surface and scared the hell out of me.

Its probably brackish..same type of fishing we have here. I will ask my friend who does a lot of fishing what's the good dirt for cheap.

If you have a Bass Pro Shop, just walk in there and start talking to people. People that fish seriously like talking about fishing almost as much or more as they do actually fishing.

(Kinda like us an music)

Yeah it would be easiest to go talk people at a tackle shop, they'll hook you up with what you need for your area.
