When making comps for friends I don't want to put songs on there that have been already played to death on the radio. Does Billboard have that somewhere, or is there a better source?

Thanks.

You could go to allmusic.com and check the chart positions for an artist's songs. Chances are, if it's a top 10-er, then it's something that might be quite familiar.

I don't listen to radio, and I'm not going to grill my friends as to what's playing on it.

Oh, okay. Use Allmusic. Every band should have a Singles section. Unless that's where fans meet up and go on dates, it should be what you're looking for.

It's not that it's not de rigueur to not listen, it's just bad listening. (Huh?).

so if you're asking for places to find out what songs have been played to death so that you don't duplicate them on a mix, you're kinda saying that you're potentially considering adding what might be contributing to bad listening.

also, not all singles are played to death. there are very few and i'd doubt that anyone who would consider radio in general as bad listening would even know those jams. i think billboard's website should do the trick for you.

You know, thanks for the tips, but I can't understand wtf you're saying.

you do not listen to radio because it's bad listening, so you need to find out what is or has been in heavy rotation so that you do not repeat those songs on compilations for your friends who presumably do listen to radio. if you want to put "song X" on a compilation for your friends and then find out that radio plays it incessantly, i'm guessing you won't add it to the playlist. hence, the song you want to add must be bad listening. and if it works in the compilation's context, why should it matter if it's been on the radio?

First or third song.

Kinda half joking, but it's often the case.

Since I'm able to check out most releases before their even released in the stores I "make" my own singles and put them on a compilation cd mix I'm digging at the time.

Later I usually hear the song on the radio, sing along with it and everybody goes, "that's new...how do you know the lyrics to that already?" :D

Definitely the first a LOT of the time...& we have the CD to thank/blame for it.

On any given album, just ask Borg what song is his favorite - then don't use that one.
