Oh yeah there was no farce in the US/Italy game.

I'd say the penalty kick call today against Ghana was more of a farce than the two red cards against Italy, but they were pretty weak calls. Congrats to the Aussies for getting the draw.

I'd say that the two red cards were spot on but the ghana penalty decision was a shocker. Hell like telescope said, this dude gave the same player two yellow cards and did not send him off. Imagine if he went on to score the winner for croatia. That's what i call a farce.

I actually felt confident that we would get that second goal back. But then I started getting worried that the ref would have a(nother) major brain explosion and hand the game to Croatia.

How good is the game against Italy going to be? There's HUGE Italian populations in both Sydney and Melbourne. And that Italy team looks entirely beatable.

Conundrum: that match is at 1am on Tuesday here. I have my final economics exam at 2pm that day. What to do...

Heh. Craig Foster (ex-Socceroo, SBS analyst) is on tv now pretty much losing it. Just as well they kept him away from the commentary booth. Les Murray has just now told him to go have a beer and calm down. Awesome

What happened in your game? I heard the result (bummer, btw), but was it deserved? What's up with this penalty call?

They called a foul on Onyewu while he was in the US box, despite the fact he headed the ball and had his hands behind his back so he wouldn't use his hands like he tends to do. He was begging for a yellow card against Italy early in the game, but was in perfect position today. The US should have at least tied Ghana without that call, which wouldn't have helped them either.

ok. I'll make sure I see it on the highlights show tonight (that is if they can get past our game  ).

So they call an unwarranted penalty in your game but miss two blatant ones in ours? (Including a hand ball from the same player whose hand ball led to the penalty that was actually called!). Wtf is going on with these refs?

Can we get Culina out of retirement and, like, clone him or something?

Bomb.

As well, with the U.S. eliminated, I think that you, Darrin (konstantinl), Harry, and bilinho g are going to have to keep this thread near the top. I expect that gauchebag and promethium won't be posting much in it, anymore.

Now that's some good looking matchups. Can't wait for the Germany/Sweden game to start.

Mexico/Argentina will be good to watch as will Holland/Portugal.

France finally played well yesterday, should be interesting aginst a fantastic looking Spain side.

Brazil will dismantle Ghana, lock of the round.

Oh yeah, and the penalty call in the US/Ghana gane was crap, but considering the way we played this time around, we're exactly where we deserve to be...going home. Shame, since despite some reports I've seen, Ghana did not look to better team on the day. We just made a couple key errors and missed our chances. Then again, its all about what happens in front of the goals, so?

Gooch actually played "cleaner" on the penalty than he often does... has a tendency to use his hands too much. But Ghana played well... you certainly can't say the US was the better team. As we've said... the US simply need some players with more world class skills... you watch the first touch and passing of Argentina, Brazil, Spain... it's like they are playing another game entirely.

harry's pics today:

Germany- Sweden 1-1 - Germany wins on penalty kicks.
Argentina 4 - Mexico 2

(doing my part to keep obner sportscenter international)

I didn't really think either team played particularly well in the US-Ghana game, about a toss up, really. Ghanna only got a couple goals off a bad call and a complete screw-up by the US, not like they were creating much of anything themselves. But, yeah the US guys need an upgrade. We can get a lucky run and beat some better teams with organization and fitness, but once we play a top team, we're gonna come up short more than not once we leave our weak region.

Still, following this team for many years, I'm just glad that we've gotten to a point where we at least qualify and don't generally embarass ourselves against good competition. I remember watching national team games at amateur facilities with a couple thousand fans as we got kicked off the field by tiny island nations and dreamed of someday being able to go to the Cup. So, progress is there, just too slowly for many. It's just gonna be a lot tougher to go from a solid international team to a truly top class team than it was to go from a bunch of scrubs to a solid team.

Agree with your picks...but I think Germany's gonna finish off Sweden without the overtime or penalties.

Gotta go watch now...

Is it too early for a beer or 5?

I think Sweden have been very poor up to now but you can't completely write a team off that has attacking talent like Larsson, Ljungberg and Ibrahimovic.

Still, I'd expect Germany to win within the 90 minutes.

I think Argentina will give Mexico a good slapping.

Sweden was unlucky to get the guy sent off...but are very lucky to only be 2 goals down.

This German team is playing very well and has been severly underrated.

Still, with Arentina waiting, they have a very tough road ahead.

If Mexico would somehow slip past Argentina, they'd be slaughtered by Germany.
