...Deee-lite.

Do you agree? I mean, I'm not religious (i.e. soul) but can you really tell something about people by the music they listen to?

What is it with people who say they don't really listen to music?

And why are the masses satsified with how they are spoon fed music?

That is just too hilarious. I wish I had done that.

It's funny you mention this because I was just re-reading the book High Fidelity and the main character fervently believes in this until his girlfriend invites him to a dinner party consisting of her friends from work and then really enjoys their company despite their bad taste in music.

yeah, I know a lot of great people that listen to terrible music, and probably even more people that I loathe with excellend taste in music. But nonetheless, I think we all see an aspect of ourselves in the music we listen to and -at least on some level- hope it helps to personify who we are.

well said, cotton.

I think we can all safely say, aside from the musical cognoscenti present here, the majority of our friends/family have what we'd consider "bad taste" in music. For me, it does say a lot. I feel like by interacting on the board, checking out lesser known magazines, reading info online, etc., etc.-- I make the effort to find new and interesting stuff. I go out of my way to make mix cd's for the friends who ARE interested in hearing something different, but perhaps don't have the time or resources (i.e. they're more responsible employees than me, ha ha). But for the most part, people are lazy and don't broaden horizons often. When people don't seek to learn new things, whatever the subject is, that speaks volumes to me.

Now granted, I know there's some network admin out there who knows the latest and greatest on Cisco routers, and would think I'm a retard for not knowing or not caring. So in that respect, I guess you have to take in context.

I was just talking about this last night. i think people listen to different music for different reasons. though i'm open to almost anything, i tend to listen to what some would consider "downer" music--i was listening to Papa M on a bright sunny day yesterday and Clem Snide is like torture to mlle.

i was thinking about it and i think it's cause, though i'm in a generally good moos most of the time, i don't spend a lot of time really soul searching (or insert an equally cliched term) and all so some of that music puts me in that place that i don't tend to go. some folks may be into more dance-y stuff because they want something to lighten their mood if they're--say--the opposite of me moodwise. does that make sense?

completely. But I'm a downer and tend to prefer the most depressing music I can get. So the mirror, i guess, yeah.

These two questions relate to eachother, imo. Most people just don't take the time to seek out good music. That is, they just don't care. They have other concerns or interests that occupy their time.

Most people have something they are interested in enough to take the time to understand the nuances and intricacies of to the point that they are able to form intelligent informed opinions about it, whether that thing is sports, movies, wine, cars, designer clothes, whatever.

Just because some people aren't intersted in music to the extent that you are doesn't necisarily mean anything. Also, music is different than some of the other examples I gave in that it saturates popular culture to the point that people consider themselves informed even if theyre only really exposed to whatever is on clear channel/MTV.
