Got out of a metal show d'town around 10 and was hungry but didn't want any drive-thru. Went up on the north side of the river (what LooGs would refer to as THEMland) where Fri-Sun in the summer dozens of pirate bbq operations set up in the pking lots of vacant stores and sell the best ribs, dogs, chicken and anything else in the state.
Rolled up on my man Larry from Memphis, but all he had was a couple foot-long Polish sausages (the ribs won't be ready until the nightclubs let out at 2 am). It's the kind that they drown in their special sauce, wrap in a couple pieces of white bread, throw on a bunch of hot pepper and wrap in foil. Got home, and dug in.

Two beers and eight paper towels later, I'm one happy man. Awesome exclamation point on a just about perfect summer day. Now if I could just get the sauce off the keyboard. Whatevs. That's what tomorrow's for.

(hiccup)

Did I really just lick bbq sauce off the cable remote?

Yes. Yes, I did. And I'd do it again.

THEY cook BBQ better than anyone else. In fact, the best BBQ I've ever eaten is in a rough ass neighborhood in downtown West Palm Beach. God bless THEM for serving up food that tastey.

I wish it was open today, but they take Sunday's off for church. Let the good Lord put his blessin' on dem ribs.

THe best places are the ones where they have a fucking 55 Gal. Drum and a grate over it...

Obviously they are everywhere in Alabama. I drove from Montgomery to Tuscaloos up Highway 82, and there are no less than 10 BBQ joints in the 102 miles of that stretch.

I seriously want to get a buddy and hit everyone of them. Maybe do a vlog or something.

Listen to gut stomp blues, roll the windows down and cruise for some 'Cue...

If I don't do that this summer, someone take a bat to me,

I had some excellent Texas BBQ in Corpus Christi on Thursday- brisket done to perfection and jalapeno sausage links made on the premises. Damn.

I want to be that buddy. I love BBQ nearly as much as booze.

That's exactly what these places are; huge rusty old drums with about 10 years worth of char on the cooking grates. Love 'em. And they're all run by shopworkers or former shopworkers who came here from the south to get auto industry jobs in the good ol' days. So they got dem dope southern sauce recipes.

I'mma hit at least one every weekend this summer, and there are so many I don't think I'll have to do too many repeats.

Yeah, like "LooGAR's guide to Alabama's Best BBQ"

and maybe post playlists from drives I make to sample stuff.

I need to do SOMETHING creative one of these years.

Naaah, 'twould remain strictly platonic. Good conversation, good booze, all in high fashion. Meet me at the bar at the 4 Seasons for cocktails, Laura ;)
