holy shit, liars fucking brought it on saturday night. this was the heaviest, most rhythmic show i've been to in a very long time, and probably my favorite show of the past year, at least. if you hated the record, don't bother coming, but if you loved it like i did, you will be amazed with how well liars pull it off live: they play the record almost note for note, and the nearly constant two drum attack creates a kind of tribal, sexual, extremely noisy atmosphere. The band, particularly the frontman Angus, is extremely charismatic. He could have asked the crowd to drink the cool-aid, and they probably would have. I certainly would've been tempted. They played nearly the entirety of Drum's not Dead, and several tracks from their previous record, all of which sounded great. And as a final validation of how ridiculously good this show was, they had the nerve to cover 'breed' by Nirvana. Normally, if a band at a show I was at covered a Nirvana song, it would be grounds for leaving, immediately. However, it totally fit and it sounded great. It's still a bit pretentious, but they're a bit pretentious anyway. All things considered, fucking ridiculously good show, will probably enter my top 10 all time show list...

And in a random note, the place was crawling with scenesters and musicians, the most notable being the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I've never been up close to Karen O before, but in person she is very cute and impossibly thin. Nick Zinner is pretty little too, but I expected this.

The Apes, and I meant to give them a shout out too: they were very good, and created an impressive wall of sound. THey also seemed to be stoned out of their minds. Still, they were quite good even though I don't really dig their singer.

And Alan Vega (of suicide fame) was supposed to open, but canceled, which bummed me out.

I'll be seeing them again at the Pitchfork Music fest. Looking forward to it. They are an enthralling live band.

I saw them at Emo's in Austin, TX when they toured on the last record and was kind of disapointed. Then again I was kind of disapointed by that record. Drum seems like it would be more conducive to playing live

Are you sure it was Breed and not Territorial Pissings? That's the one they did at the show we went to.

I saw them on this tour and I wasn't into it very much. I like Drum's Not Dead, but to me it's kind of home-alone/headphones kind of record.

well, my 2p for this show:
the soundguy at avalon is clearly deaf, or close to it. i had been there many, many times when it was limelight so i know it aint the particularities of the space's acoustics that m,ade everything so muddy.
the apes sounded like absolute shit. it had that " loud drum/loud vox/everything else is just noise" quality that is reserved only for opening bands who get summarily [sonically?] fucked, but in this case, there were only 2 bands. they couldve done a better job. a MUCH better job.

liars seemed to have some technical problems. aaron stopped multiple times to retune his floor tom. also, dont know if it was just me, but i felt like their energy level was a bit weaker than i thought it would be, based on earlier shows i had seen of theirs. the songs sounded good, when they finally managed to lock into something, and i think the seemingly improvised sections were probably much better sounding than the audience actually got to hear, which kind of blew. it's frustrating to know someone is doing something that might be interesting, but you just cant hear it so well.
overall, it was a somewhat disappointing show, but mainly because we coulnt really get a handle on the sound, rather than the band not being good.

I hit that show and was far from being disappointed despite Emo's shitty, shitty sound. They should steamroll that hole and build anew. I am disappointed Liars are bypassing Minneapolis during this current tour.
