It's the NME
"Greatest Song Ever In The History Of The World (for this 5 minutes, or until tomorrow, when it becomes utter shite)"

Nah, they all closed up shop when Peel died. Whole empire moved to Chicago.

"Spring 2002. For the first time in almost forty years, UK artists are entirely absent from the US Billboard Chart of Top 100 singles."

yeah, there aren't any American publications that spew the same crap.

:wanker:

Billboard is the biggest pile of garbage. I can't believe anyone even pays attention to that shit. Fuck them and fuck all the labels that pay for their sorry ass artists to be a part of the charts.

If you are being serious rather than facetious the equivalent of the Billboard Top 100 would be the Top 40 Singles chart.

However since the UK chart only every took into consideration ACTUAL sales of singles (rather than radio airplay as I believe the Billboard chart does) then the importance of the chart has waned as single sales have declined over the last 10 years or so. In the seventies and eighties a single would need to sell hundreds of thousands of units each week to make the top portion of the chart. These days you can get to number one by selling a few thousand.

The singles chart did attempt to update it's self by recently including legal download sales but with the BBC announcing it is to axe Top of the Pops (essentially the Top 40 on television) the end is nigh for the Singles chart.

Also with so few actual units sold and digital downloads being taken into consideration it is relatively easy to 'fix' and there have been many allegations of record companies fixing chart placings in recent times.

Essentially the singles chart is meaningless now and will almost certainly disappear in the next few years.

Not saying anything about Billboard NOT being a pile of garbage.
It's just fun to tease NME.

Is that the equivalent to MTV?

Is Britain just giving up? I knew America dominated but I didn't know Britain was completely getting out of the game.

Yep, shut right down. Thousands of cockney biddies wandering around Mag Mile looking for the Katie Melua CD as we speak.

Oh missed this. What's the billboard 100 for a start. Okay i can guess, but still ive never looked at it. I think the NME still has a lot better reputation overseas now than here. Remember Melody Maker? So much better. NME is a comic book run by HMV & record labels now but the young un's still love it.

As for the charts, what Darrin said. Downloads have been intergrated into the charts to keep it afloat and i would guess contribute to decent percentage.

The NME top 10 charts on MTV is what the kids take notice of now.

The British equivalent of the Billboard 100 is dog's bollocks. And I don't mean in the figurative sense. They have an actual heap of canine testicles in a closet at the BBC - and this decaying pile of dogberries holds the exact same cultural relevance as the Billboard 100.

Canada is metric, so our equivalent is a half-liter mug of beaver spit.

The Crazy frog ringtone song did get to No 1 over here, so yeah. Somebody else said it in another post, nowadays you only need a few thousand sales to make it into the top 20. I believe Bryan Adams held the record for the song that was No1 for the longest time period. Although that may of been beaten by now.

the british equivalent is compiled in a similar manner to the billboard 100 (airplay + sales) by a very uncreatively named Official U.K. Charts Company. there are several different charts in the u.k., though, but not all compile data of physical or digital single sales or receive widespread airplay date from stations.

edit: for example, here's how we cite it.

keep in mind the consumer is also responsible for who makes the charts. folks all over the country keep calling their local station to request the new paris hilton single. they're the ones who sprint to download "hips don't lie" from itunes. they keep shelling the bucks to purchase the newest incarnation of nickelback.

to clarify, labels can't pay billboard to get their artist on the chart (much to their chagrin). charting artists arrive there due to singles/albums sales and airplay.

if with to debate (or simply "fuck") billboard charts' artistic/cultural relevancy, that's another matter, but our data/methodology shouldn't be mixed up with your strong feelings.

Truth.

I got about 50 requests for "Stars Are Blind" this week. And that's with less than 80,000 people in my county.

I'll give "stars are blind" this much: I've heard it twice, once when I watched the video, second when Lady KPH watched it, and I can still recall the chorus a few weeks hence. That kind of stickiness is pretty rare/deplorable.
