long story short, i overpaid my 2004 property taxes by $900 and am now due a refund from the state.

i contacted my real estate attorney and because he's such a dick, he referred me directly to his assistant. for the past three months, this woman has been tracking down my file, cancelled checks, shit from the title company and has been making tons of phone calls on my behalf. she's not getting paid for this and she's doing it out of the kindness of her heart.

i'd like to get her something to say thank you, but i'm drawing a blank. flowers and candy are too unoriginal. can you think of something that might be a little more unique and practical? i've never even met her in person, but i'm guessing she's probably in her 40's.

thanks!

1) call the office and ask the receptionist what Hazel or whatever her name is is in to...that should be a good starting point.

2) Gift Certificates to generic big box stores or even Starbucks are probably a safe bet to be appreciated by most.

1) she answers the phone. i've never spoken to anyone but her or the attorney.

2) good idea.

Get her an ironing board. Always works on women.

Actually, I recommend unique over on-target.

For instance, we have a chocolatier in town that makes these awesome little square truffles with, oh fuck it, here's a picture.

[img][466:500]http://www.delochoc.com/Images/Bay%20Collection%2012.gif[/img]

People LOVE these things. They are a little pricey for what you get, but they are memorable and unique. Some people even hesitate to eat them, and they are really good. They also have drinking chocolates and other interesting things.

So that's my recommendation. Surely Chicago has something comparable.

over 40, i say a gift card from Macy's, Robinson's May, etc., from one of those nice department stores, or Barnes & Nobles, Borders, etc.

And a nice basket of flowers. Or just go to http://www.1800flowers.com

They have some nice stuff there.

How about an overnight at a bed and breakfast?

Cap'n and his wife stayed at one in Wicker Park, so she could get some r&r without the hassle of getting out of town.

Then she can go have crime scene sex and just tie the sheets in a knot with a note that reads "Sorry. Umm... handle with surgical gloves and burn these in a dumpster. Thanks."

Actually, she probably gets paid by the hour, and did this stuff during office hours, so she probably did get paid for it.

Get her tickets to a show at Schuba's that a 40 year old would like. (One of those Saturday 7:00 shows)

Let me rephrase my original statement. Of course she did it during work hours, so she was paid for it. But, I didn't pay anything to have it done. Therefore, I feel like she did me a huge favor.

I want to steer away from food because it seems like everyone's either allergic to something or on a diet. Those edible arrangements are gorgeous, though.

massage gift certificate?
pedicure? manicure?

i think even the 'non-girliest' of girls would enjoy a splurge like this. (and, of course, girly girls would too...so you've got all bases covered.)
