Does that untarnish Lance's accomplishment of owning the Tour De France because it's being reported that

MADRID, Spain -- Jan Ullrich, Tyler Hamilton and Ivan Basso were among 56 cyclists named in a Spanish probe as having contacted a doctor charged in connection with alleged doping, a leading radio station reported Thursday.

Cadena SER said the Civil Guard had decoded the names from notes taken by Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes. Other names included Spaniards Francisco Mancebo, Joseba Beloki, Roberto Heras, Santi Perez, Jose Enrique Gutierrez and Colombian Santiago Botero, SER reported.

The radio station did not give any details what kind of contact the cyclists had with Fuentes.

I think 'clean' in professional sports is a quaint image people are trying their best to keep - sort of like newlyweds thinking their mates never took it in the backseat behind Kmart. The lie serves a purpose, but everyone knows it isnt true.

is the question that, if the entire field's dirty, then the differential between them and Armstrong is still great enough to celebrate his accomplishments?

You mean had sex in a car behind K-Mart, or took backddor action in the skeezy alleyway back there, cos, you know, there's a difference.

Oh no you di'ent. I doubt you can name many other athletes that were so dominating in a sport. To win the the Tour de France (which changes every year), and to be down with a specific cause and follow through with it...yeah, I think I'll herald him.

Also, with that report, I'm not doubting the people never did or looked into the juice, but seriously is it not a little fishy that it happens to come out 'round tour time, and that at least 1 if not 2 of those guys are contenders?

Yeah, because people sucked his one nut after he got the cancer and came back and won again.

I'm not saying that the performing enhancement drugs gave him the cancer in the first place. What I AM saying is that the drugs gave him the cancer in the first place.

Self righteous douche, IMO.

Even if it gave him cancer, AND even if he was juicing while riding...winning 7 Tours come on. You need to be a superior athlete to even accomplish that, and like I said juice or not.

Rationalize his being a cheat and a fraud anyway that helps you sleep at night, FR ;)

I don't REALLY care, but there is something about him that rubs me the wrong way...probably the shilling for Pfizer over say, working for the Gates Foundation or something similar.

I usually suspect everyone when things look a little too good to be true. But I figure there's got to be someone that I give the benefit of the doubt to. And for me, it's Lance.

Wonder why.

Lance deserves accolades solely for the fact that he's done something worthwhile with his money and foundation. And he's an inspiration to many people That speaks volumes. (I will not comment on his choice to date Sheryl "Scare" Crow though). He may not be the type of guy I'd hang out with, but he deserves my respect.

As for dopers in cycling, why is it always cycling that gets the bad rap first? Do you realize that the French government puts the crackdown on cyclists, but they don't do a goddamned thing about their own soccer players? why is that?

Tyler Hamilton is currently on suspension for using EPO. I've never heard anything about Ivan or Jan though.

Quote:
STRASBOURG, France -- Former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich was suspended by his racing team Friday amid a doping scandal in Spain, forcing him out of cycling's premier race.

Ullrich's T-Mobile teammate Oscar Sevilla, Ivan Basso and other riders also are being excluded from the race.

Tour director Christian Prudhomme said team managers had agreed that riders implicated in the Spanish scandal would not be allowed to race. He said Basso's manager was informing the Italian rider of that decision.

Ullrich and Sevilla were among 56 cyclists named in a Spanish probe as having contact with a doctor charged in connection with alleged doping, a Spanish radio station reported Thursday.

"They will not ride in the Tour" that starts Saturday, T-Mobile spokesman Luuc Eisenga said.

The team also suspended sporting director Rudi Pevenage, he said.

Ullrich won the 1997 Tour de France and was a five-time runner-up. With Lance Armstrong's retirement, the German rider was considered one of the favorites for this year's race.

Tour organizers decided Tuesday that evidence against Ullrich was too limited to ask him to withdraw. On Friday, Eisenga said the team was acting on "very concrete information."

Eisenga said the team received information implicating Ullrich, Sevilla and Pevenage from Tour de France organizers, including documents from the Spanish government.

"The only thing I can tell you is that the information is clear enough and didn't leave any doubt," Eisenga said.

T-Mobile will discuss whether it would include two replacement riders on the team in place of Sevilla and Ullrich, Eisenga said. The team would also be willing to ride with only seven riders if necessary.

Spanish station Cadena SER said the Civil Guard decoded the names from notes taken by Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes. Other names included Italian rider Basso, American Tyler Hamilton, Spaniards Francisco Mancebo, Joseba Beloki, Roberto Heras, Santi Perez, Jose Enrique Gutierrez and Colombian Santiago Botero, the station reported. It wasn't immediately clear what Fuentes' relationship was with the cyclists.

Two Spanish cycling teams -- Astana-Wurth and Comunidad Valenciana -- have been implicated. Comunidad Valenciana had its invitation to compete in the Tour rescinded, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled Thursday that the Astana-Wurth team couldn't be excluded from the race.

Hamilton said on his Web site this week that he was never been treated by the Spanish doctor, and that he had never been contacted by Spanish authorities about the case.

Currently serving a two-year ban for testing positive for blood doping at the Spanish Vuelta in September 2004, Hamilton had his gold medal from the Athens Olympics upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport earlier this week.

Sir Donald Bradman didn't need drugs to dominate a sport I don't give a shit about.
