*sigh.*

I had a really bad experience with these dudes in this punk rock recording studio today. It kind of annoyed me for awhile, but still, I felt it was work talking/flaming about.

Basically, me and my friend were supposed to go see an exhibit on this street corner gallery, and there was a band playing in the building next to it. So naturally, I decided to want to check it out, right?

We went around the place to find a rinky door with graffiti over it and a sign that said "Sound Of Music", if I remember that correctly.....it also said to "ring bell for entry', so I did. This nice but seemingly cautious kid gets the door, and asked what we wanted. I told him that we'd heard the band through the windows, and that I didn't know that there was a studio here, and wanted to inquire about it. He gave me a weird look and then this other guy comes in, and starts asking the same question. So I gave him the same answer, and he pretty much thinks that I'm nuts or whatever, and gets this expression on his face that makes it clear that he wants us out. Then he asks if either of us were in a band, so I said that I was, and either he didn't believe me (I was in my polo shirt and khakis) or didn't give a shit, and just says "yeah..."...not "we're busy right now", not "set up an appointment", just gives me the "get the fuck out of here" look. So we were on our way, even though the kid offered to give me the card to the place. I declined.

Anyways, I know that that was a bit unorthodox, but still, is that how dudes react to people -- musicians, even -- asking about their place? I mean, was I in the wrong or was this guy a (racist? anti-preppy? homophobic?) bastard?

I've been tempted to tell alot of the musicians I know to stay the fuck away from that place...luckily I had a smoothie with me and calmed down...

that place is way out of your league. basically you walked into a professional's office and thought that you would just waste their time for fun.

You've got to be kidding. There was nothing professional about the way that place looked, and certainly not the way any of them acted...had it been, I would've responded accordingly, but the impresssion I got from it was that it was some dingy pratice spot that some guys were playing in....

That, and I'm not into wasting people's time, and certainly not my own.

Dude if it was GWAR that they interupted, someone in town would have fucked them up. GWAR's up there with Avail, J.E.B. Stuart and some other loser as "people who cannot be fucked with" in this town. either way, it was probably some kids that either cashed in some favors to record there or paid something, to them, that amounted to serious money, and here this douchebag with a smoothie walks up, rings the bell, and wants to poke around on their time. I'd be irritated to, although I'd probably explain myself better. or maybe they were robbing the place.

Not to be rude Vince, but I have to agree with Crack here. I mean, you're basically pissed that they didn't allow you to nose around. In all fairness, I think its rather judgemental to take this guy at face value and then turn around and question whether he was racist/homophobic. Pretty big finger pointing, that I really hope you don't just toss around.

Also, they probably get a million people just walking up and asking to see the place. Not only that, but he may have thought YOU were hipster, on some fanboy mission.

Well, I didn't know that the place had such a rep....still, I don't get how people can be so easily dismissive, on whatever basis. I mean, I could've dealt with a simple, generic "we're busy" response.

But yeah, GWAR are from here, aren't they?

EDIT: After looking at the Wiki site..For all the bands who've recorded there, you'd think they could afford a decent paint job.

Dude if you had millions of dollars worth of gear would you want strangers a) knowing where it is, and b) snooping around possibly taking stock of what you have.

I know it probably felt like indie snobbery, but the truth is most people prefer to keep their studio locations secret and only admit people who are good friends or clients.

My band used to have a practice space / studio so I've been on the other side of this before. Once we had people just walk in on us while we were practicing. Another time a bunch of guys knocked on the door and then kind of pushed their way in. Sure they were probably just goofy musicians thrilled by the gear, but it was really hard to tell whether that was the case or whether they were casing the joint.

The truth is that there was a guy (we knew) who played in a band in the same building as us who we found out later was doing jobs from the inside.... stealing people's gear.

Anyway, so don't take it personally, just consider it from their perspective. Studios are generally not "show and tell" kinds of places. And re: the shabby outside of it... that's probably part of keeping it on the low and low, (although apparently they need some better sound proofing).

heh. No, I don't really throw that around (even though, yeah, yesterday it was a bit hasty).... It just seems like whenever there's some sort of superficial reason that something weird happens to me, it usually falls into those two camps. I'd rather not get to into this, lol, I'm going to be leaving soon anyways.

Anyways. Can we lock this thread? I don't have the authority to do it, so...

I think it's probably bad policy to lock threads based solely on topic-maker's remorse. It'll sink fast enough.
