my daughter just called me for help. she's leaving for south africa in a week and the students at the school where they will be living/doing community service have been practicing a song that they'll perform for the group. so her group is hooking up with a group from london (nine boys and one girl) and thay need to pick a song to practice and sing. it has to be an upbeat song so i am of no help. she needs five ideas for a meeting tonight and has turned to me because she pretty much listens to musicals and opera.

so i throw this out to the obnish: an upbeat tune that 16/17 year olds won't feel lame singing. i realize that this may be impossible but give it a shot people.

Nothing says upbeat like a bunch of suburban kids clapping and singing Lean on Me.

Just because I was listening to it now, I nominate 'Ask the Children' by the Cherry People- the most sugary pop you can imagine..and yet to me, very dark inside. Kinda like the icecream man who has a open, sticky-paged pr0n magazine just out of eyeshot of his customers.

Link to follow? maybe.

There must be some Beatles song that could sing. I was also thinking of the Stones' "I'm Free" but maybe that's not such a good one.

yeah, depending on where she's singing you might not wanna arm her with a song we stole from the place she's singing it.

still, I think "Sun City" would be hilarious.

there's nothing cooler than an international medley of children doing the "Ah wee mo way a wee mo way" part (perhaps as a round?) in the motherland! well, maybe one thing; who sang A.F.R.I.C.A.? was it Stet?

GENIUS, DAVE!!! Everytime the kids at our church get up in front of the congregation and sing something, I lean into my wife's ear and go, "Children...children...future...future."

I was thinking maybe a choral version of Wesley Willis' "I'm Sorry I Got Fat I Will Slim Down"

If that's no good, do "Easy On Down The Road" from The Wiz and have the youngest and shortest dude do a hip-hop solo.
