While I can understand why 'critics' compare him to Nick Drake, I find these to be lazy and a little off base. The last few years if you're writing 'folk' songs, using interesting open tunings played seamlessly while singing in a low monotone voice you're automatically being compared to Nick Drake. That's just plain crazy.
Lyrically, arrangement wise, even melodically, he has a ways to go before joining the Drake camp.
While 'Veneer' has a few standout tracks, I don't think it's anything groundbreaking. As for the new one I haven't heard a note. I'm curious though.
are you referring to the ep? very similar to veneer, expect nothing new.
as for the drake comparison, i see songs like "Deadweight On Velveteen" and "Broken Arrows" very similar to drake's rolling/fingerpicking guitar style, much like a couple of songs from kings of convenience follow suit.
certainly, most of nick drake's songs are in a major key and gonzalez' are mostly in a minor. but i also wouldn't call their voices monotone, they're just not widely dynamic. they both manage to use their voices to carry rhythms just as much as they do their melodies (see drakes' "things behind the sun," "man a shed")
drake has a lot of allusions to nature, light and active "roving" themes. he also had a few somewhat questionable rhyming schemes ("nobody knows/how cold it grows/and nobody sees/how shaky my knees"). gonzalez does too.
drake lines i like:
"think about stories with reason and rhyme
circling through your brain.
and think about people in their season and time
returning again and again"
"do it for you,
sure that you would do the same for me one day."
gonzalez lines i like:
"my moves are slow but soon they'll know
behind the scenes they grow their schemes
hiding intentions, revealing only fractions
their moves are slow but soon you'll know"
"we'll walk along our own path
the one which will lead us to our own bless
but we need hints before we get tired
we need speed before we lose pace
We need a hint to know we're on the right track"
ok ive thought about this way too much. i love nick drake and i think that jose has hisself a really really good start of making quiet music that impacts.
