Update: more cops came this morning from the burglary squad. As bumbling as they've been, they sure have sent plenty of dudes. Anyway, they agreed that the guy probably lives on the block, and found footprints leading across the rooftops (I don't think they followed them to the thief's den or anything). They also had no idea why the evidence squad took the backpack. Apparently there is no protocol for investigating BURGLARIES in NEW YORK CITY. Roommate flyered this morning. More news as it comes in.

As for putting the system on trial, it's just not gonna happen. Cops have to really really screw up to lose immunity from what I understand.

I'm late to chime in on this, but I'm so sorry to hear this, Aaron. I've been burglarized before too, and aside from the fact that they tend to take your nice stuff, I can't get over the fact that some stranger has been rifling through my stuff. That, to me, is the bigger violation.
