I'm in Academy Records & spot what I think is a new John Doe Thing CD, "For the Best of Us." I've liked, not loved, his last few releases, but buy the CD anyway.

Start playing it, and he's angry! Yes! Actually snickered like Beavis & Butthead during the first listen. Like it much better than the mellower stuff. I'm thinking, this sounds like the old John Doe. So of course, look at the booklet last night & it says that the songs were recorded in '95 - '96. Apparently YepRoc re-released an old 5 song EP, and added 5 unreleased tracks. Whatever. Gonna give it a few more listens this weekend, see just how good it is.

Yeh, it's the old For The Rest Of Us ep with 5 extra songs from the same session. I don't remember liking the ep that much. I do remember selling it though.

IMO he's gotta rank as serving up one of the most disappointing solo careers ever. I saw him touring for Meet John Doe, when he was fresh out of X (and had Richard Lloyd & Jon Dee Graham in his band), and it remains one of the best concerts I've ever seen. But the album itself didn't come anywhere close to that live show, and ditto every subsequent album he's ever released.

Follow up question: Should YepRoc have to make it clear on the packaging that the songs are 10 years old? I was definitely surprised when I read the booklet.
