IN a Krylon haze last night, we were, of course, arguing about anything and everything. When Scotty D is up in Redlands, this usually devolves into rampant screaming about sports. And by sports, I mean football.

The question, though is: Art Monk. Hall of Famer or no?

I say he's first ballot all the way. Bloor contends he is worthy, but not in the pantheon.

Opinions?

I don't know shit about football outside the mid-90s. But I do know that Art Monk should be in the Hall of Fame of badass names.

Well, I believe he's the NFL's 5th all-time leading receiver--he sure as hell better be in the HOF.

ABSOLUTELY! And I'm a Cowboys fan with no real interest in giving props to anything Redskin-related whatsoever.

Apart from TD receptions, he's got pretty comparable career stats to Steve Largent (whose career reception record Monk broke) with only two more years of playing. He deserves to get in before Jerry Rice becomes eligible.

Why is Monk only on the ballot now? He played last in '95. Largent got in six years after his last season.

...that never won a Super Bowl.

I'm a Browns fan. I lived in Denver for four years, during their Super Bowl runs. I was sick of the hero worship as anybody, but rationally I'm with the Senator on this one. Montana succeeded because of his system. Up until the late 90s, Elway succeeded in spite of his. Yeah, Unitas is pretty sweet, too, I guess.

A guy who has so many fourth quarter comebacks because REEEEE (Dan Reeves) would play so conservatively, that in the 4th, he'd just give Elways the ball and tell to win it.

Montana is a guy who I've come around on a lot in the past several years. Great quarterback, but c'mon, ELWAY....Jeebus. Just watch the play near the end of the Green Bay Super Bowl where he gete creamed, helicoptered, and holds on to the ball for the first down.

Also, a dude who used to dodge incoming defensive players in domes by seeing their SHADOWS. Simply cannot be fucked with.

Best receiver ever, EVER, EVER

Why isn't Mosely in the hall? Do they just not like kickers?

Its funny, cos our boy Scotty D is a Skins fan, and I can't fucking stand em, but I'm a Cowboys fan from waaaay back, and would see this bastard twice a year, every year. I think at some point I threw out "He was Jerry Rice before Jerry Rice." As in the, the dude who caught everything thrown in his general direction. If he had a consistent QB ala Montana or Young, he'd be remembered in a bit higher esteem.

Obviously you have forgotten the brilliance of Jay Schroeder.

I think Monk's biggest problem is that he never drew much attention to himself. He was exceptionally talented, always reliable and performed at a high level throughout his career.

He didn't have that flair for the dramatic or style that many receivers good or bad tend to survive on. One of his more outspoken moments was wearing his socks at his ankles in protest, I believe against the lack of black coaches and front office personnel, but I don't remember precisely. That's about as flashy as Monk got.

And I like that. He did his job very well every play, year in and year out. I think that subtlety and reliability is often overlooked, especially by HOF voters and writers in pro sports. He's like the Bert Blyleven, Jack Morris or Alan Trammell of football.

I'd vote him in, though probably not the three baseball examples.

In my Hall, Morris is first ballot. 254 wins, and a fucking maniac. With the eception of Don Larsen, who actually threw a perfect game, Morris' game 7 in 1991 is the best game pitched in WS history.

84, 91 and 92 WS champion. Hate him, a Brave killer in the postseason, but first ballot.

I take that back. I had replaced Dale Murphy with Jack Morris. I would take Morris.
