I enjoyed the hell out of it. Fun movie, though I got pretty dizzy twice in it due to ACTION ACTION ACTION. I'm pretty sure that's never happened to me before.

yeah, that kept bothering me, that other than when she was posing as a man, she looked like she'd spent the last 8 hours in front of a cosmetics mirror with a pit crew.

I'm curious to see what becomes of the girl fom 28 Days Later in the next movie...

People going to see Pirates of the Caribbean looking for plot and character development need to rexamine their life. That's like saying the Goonies suck because it's convoluted.

Can't wait to see it. All I expect is a blockbuster kid movie that is spectacle and fun. Tap into the ole' inner child for 2 hours. If it does that then it meets my expectations, and made my 10 bucks worth it.

I failed to get an obner from Keira in this movie. She's a very handsome woman, though.

You could say the same thing about Baby Geniuses 2, but there's got to be something else that makes you see Pirates and not BG2. My guess is that however much you think you're turning off your brain, that thing is plot & character development.

Not really the same type of movie and it's less about "turning your brain off" and more about just enjoying something without over-analyzing it.

Ok, but I'm sure you don't like every blockbuster kids movie involving swords, either. You don't have to over-analyze a movie to know it's bad. The Matrix sequels, for example... they were so agressively bad, that no matter how hard you tried not to notice, and no matter how well the first one was done, you had to acknowledge that they were turds.

Probably not but I'm not bringing my indie adult cinema verite ideals to a kids movie involving swords is more the point then coming up with strict rules on enjoying film.

Ah, yes. I'm becoming all too familiar with the less-indie-than-thou defense, employed here even though no one said anything about strict rules about enjoying film. If plot and character are aspirations too lofty to expect of summer viewing, I suppose I am overthinking things.

There's plenty of character, and enough plot to make the next one something to anticipate. I will agree that this film is more a bridge to the next one without much really being realized, but I guess they decided against a six-hour movie.

I'm not really saying that. What I'm saying is I know what I'm getting from a Justin Timberlake or a Beyonce record before I buy it. Yes some stuff surpasses it's niche' but still. There are tons of movies out there for plot and character devolopment if you want them. I enjoy those too. It's not less-indie-than-thou but more what-did-you-expect?

And I'm not trying to say it sucked--I haven't seen it. I'm just saying it's silly to say that plot and character development are too much to expect of a summer blockbuster. They're enormous parts of any enjoyable movie, and I think that any movie that doesn't do them well is going to be obviously bad. And so if a critic says that PoC lacks either, I don't think that's overly demanding, or too, um, "indie."

I'll point out I meant character motivations, not development.

They're different things. Plenty of character development. But the reasons WHY characters did things were often strained or it felt scenes had been cut.

Hell of a fun flick, though.

I think the lesson here is that you shouldn't enjoy any movie other than the Cremaster Cycle.
