maybe they were referring to her with the title "dead man's chest"

From the look of her, she stopped eating and her treasure depleted.

I am pretty sure the motivations for characters to do something was based on the character development in Pirates numero uno. If characters are established, you don't need to reestablish their character in a sequel. We didn't need to have Han Solo's character reestablished to know that he put on the tough guy, just in it for the money persona. We didn't need more character development in Kill Bill II to know why Bea wanted to murder Bill.

If anything Pirates II and three should just be Pirates IIa and Pirates IIb. If you ask me, the real problem was not marketing that there was this third movie that is already filmed coming out. It has created this situation where people are wanting more out of the movie. Rightly so, because it wasn't a complete movie. It was only half. So, you got half the story.

Now Aaron and Bullee....go see the movie and shut the hell up. :)

Somebody teach Scarlett how to speak in a British accent, so she can be cast in these types of roles, instead of "Ol' Ironing Board" Knightley!

Ok. That is funny. I am going to make a public recognition of this. Too often funny posts get laughed at in the privacy of the readers' homes and not often enough are they verbally affirmed for their wit. So, be affirmed.

Now. To address the issue, particularly to FT. Some people, particularly those men with serious asian fetishes, find the lack thereof to be horribly attractive. Maybe men with Asian fetishes should be automatically locked up because it is most likely that they like the small petite bodies of asian women because they resemble little girls.

Either way, Keira is the member-of-the-Aryan-Nation-who-secretly-fantasizes-about-asian women's dream come true.

Asian women are beautiful, and enormous "treasure chests" certainly aren't a must, but I'd at least like to see a leading lady who doesn't make Karen Carpenter look like Ricki Lake.

The less attractive a woman is, the more heavily she must rely upon sheer acting ability. Call it The Streep Principle. (Sorry, LoChi, but Meryl's an AKC-certified woofer.)

Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man is a heck of a lot different than Dead Man's Chest

Though Depp has face paint and fires flintlocks in both

:whiff:

I saw it and snuck into Superman Returns afterwards. I liked this more than SR but it definitely wasn't as good as the first one though the setup for the 3rd one seems interesting.

it was more like an extended trailer for the third one than a movie in its own right.

I say there was too much fantasy and witchraft and wizardry and not enough swashbuckling.

Just watched this not ten minutes ago. Still processing it. Iggy Pop was gold.
He's great in Coffee and Cigerettes as well.

I think the development of Depp's character in Dead Man was awesome. The Syd Barret youtube from another thread goes well with Neil Young's score.

We must not have seen the same movie. Because I saw a HELL of a lot of swashbuckling.

Ok my comments in response to many others:

Also, Keira can act(Rent Pride and Prejudice-that Oscar nom was no fluke), it's just not necessary for her to do so in the sequel because her part seems a bit smaller and a teeny bit unnecessary. Unlike the first one.

Yes she is too skinny. You can't tell as much in the movie but in real life she resembles a walking skeleton.

The movie was great. Not as good as the first, no, I'll agree with that. But it was fun to watch. If a teeny bit long. They needed to have cut at least 20 minutes out.

Who out there keeps saying there was no plot or no resolve to the end? Umm yeahh. There was a plot. It wasn't too hard to figure out or follow.

And as for the end, I think the last half hour was easily the best and the ending was an awesome setup for the third.

As for marketing the third with this film?? If you have seen the first and knew of the second then you knew there was a third. Period. Even my 9 yr old knows there's a third Pirates film coming out.

FT, I respectfully disagree with you regarding Streep. I think when she was younger she was very beautiful. And lately she's been looking pretty awesome. I don't think she's ugly at all.

Just like the first one, you can hate on the acting and the plot, but somehow, by not taking itself too seriously, this film succeeds despite the shortcomings.

It obviously owes a debt to star wars (depp on the spit = han on the ewok spit. The crew in the hanging cage = han, luke, droids in the net, again by the ewoks. The carnac monster = The Pit of Sarlac. Hell even the fish crew looked a bit like some of the monster in the newer Gar Wars)
It also borrowed a bit from Apocalypse Now (The crazy swamp bitch at the end of the dark swamp river...which was started from the light...) I don't think for a second these were overt homages, just general subconscious plot stealing.

Also, they apparently ran out of ideas, because Elf Boy ends up surrounded and captured by the cannibals and the fish crew of the Dutchman, AND the spinning bone cage escape was almost exactly like the sword fight on the old wheel.

Though, I really did like the swashbuckling aspect of a lot of the action scenes...again, not taking itself seriously.

I'd say 3/4 *s and I can't wait to see the next one.
