Looking to spend between $1000-1500.

Want your opinions on: brand, reliability, satisfaction, customer service, essential software, etc.

Looks llike we're going with a Pentium Duo processor and Windows XP Professional OS unless someone tells me there's a good reason not to. Will be setting up a wireless network too and this will be used for both at home and at work. Those new 17" monitors with numeric keypads look nifty.

Anyone want to give me some ideas? What say you.

I got a Gateway last October, and I've been really happy with it. It was my first laptop. This is the first one I found on their website with a 17", keypad and in your price range. Specs other then that didn't look too bad either.

I just got a Dell Latitude D620 that I'm really enjoying. I paid more than your range, but I also pumped some of the specs up because I use Adobe products pretty much all the time.

To get the Latitudes, you have to go through the Dell Small Business, not Home store. It will ask you for a business name, but you can just make some shit up. The D820 is a 15.4" model of the same style. You can get the Home models with gigantic coupons on them, but from what I've read, Small Business has support in the States, not offshore, and the build quality is better.

What I like:
14" Widescreen at about 5 lbs. I didn't want to lug around a monster, so portability was a definite concern. Larger screen (and higher resolution) but lighter than my brother's 13" Macbook. I also really like the keyboard, and I've never been a fan of notebook keyboards. Feels nice and durable, not fragile. Performs well, but I haven't really put it to any grueling work yet.

If you really want to research, go to to Notebook Review Forums. You don't even have to register or post, just read and use the search function. You'll learn plenty.

Thanks Fu and thisotherkingdom, will check those out. Dell is a probable choice so far.

Anyone have any opinions on IBM or Toshiba?

I've heard nothing but good things on ThinkPads, now made by Lenovo, but from most accounts it's the same as when they had the IBM tag on them. Same people, developers, etc.

However, ThinkPads are more expensive. I was going to get a T43, but it was going to cost several hundred bucks more with less favorable specs than by D620, PLUS it would likely take 4-6 weeks for delivery. I had my Dell in a week, despite my bank freezing my card since I had made a bunch of crazy electronics purchases in about four days.

I didn't do much research, but I'm not a fan of my Dell work laptop, so I ended up getting a Sony Vaio on a whim. It's a solid computer (the display half doesn't shake when you move the lower half like my Dell or some older Thinkpads), clean design, bright as hell LCD screen. I've been really happy with it. Mine's a 15.4" (I believe) and it's about 6 pounds, but I'm not so worried about portability. It mainly stays in my apartment.

This is what I bought recently... pretty small and pretty crazy.

Site: http://www.averatec.com/notebooks/1000series.htm
Review: http://www.mobiletechreview.com/noteboo ... c-1000.htm

It's the Averatec 1150

Intel® Pentium® M ULV 733 (1.1GHz)
1GB Ram
80GB HD
Firewire
DVD drive
wireless
3.6 Ibs

Probably a bit small for some people. It's pretty insane. It's basically the size of a hardcover book but it has the same specs as my desktop. Part of me thinks I should have just bought a Mac laptop.

Just figured I'd throw it in here.

I'll throw my .02 in as well. I have a Gateway laptop, and while I really dig/dug the specs and price--I've had more problems with it than I can even notate here. That's not unusual from what I understand either. I had a Gateway (2000 then), desktop in college, and that was riddled with problems as well. I doubt I'll go back to them ever again.

Other experiences I've had/been privy to:

-Mac's customer service seems good, though they take for frickin' ever to process if you physically have to send it in. They do however make up for it usually with a gift card or something.

-Dell's seem to be ok, if you plan on emailing and surfing obner all day.

SP, I just bought an IBM T42 (1.7 Ghz, 40GB, 14" screen) with 2 years left on the warranty for $635 shipped on eBay. You should really consider doing the same. It's like buying a used car - the market value drops drastically off the lot, but with 2 years left on the warranty, the actual value really doesn't.

Wouldn't the computer changing hands negate any type of warrenty that the computer would have?

Nope. Warrantees are usually transferrable. And I never know how to spell warrantee.
