the only music i now "love" that was once ruined was depeche mode stuff. music for the masses & "home" (off ultra, i think) in particular. but that's not been the case for years now.

I usually get over these associations pretty quickly, fortunately.

none that I can think of. I had to rip Morphine's "All Your Way" and Superchunk's "On the Mouth" out of my life for about a year, but otherwise I've never really had any issue with this sort of thing.

Same here, baby. And I'd add Slowdive, Pale Saints, MBV, Spiritualized and Broadcast to that.

I seem to have salvaged Stereolab and Tortoise.

I had XTC ruined for me for a little while back in the mid-90's.

I would be so pissed.

I can't think of anything that's been ruined because of anyone, but just because of time and growing away from things. Not because it was bad music, but just because, I don't know, it was "that time and that place," and it just doesn't work or fit in my life anymore. I spent much of last year cleaning a bunch of stuff like that out of my collection, and I feel so much better for it. Onward and upward, I say!

Patrick Swayze - "She' Like The Wind" was ruined for me by my 4th grade girlfriend. Not much of a loss.

I had this feeling about Goldfrapp's "Felt Mountain," but it was a different situation... not a breakup. I've since gotten over it. :)

what if it's not even a significant other? i had a monumental falling out with a friend last year and there're some bands that they played ad nauseam that i still associate with them.

the only band that was ruined for me because of an ex was explosions in the sky, but i've gotten over that.

i had jeff buckley taken from me for a long time, couldn't bring myself to put it on. however, i was able to reclaim with the following method: not intentionally listening to it for a very long time, and then, having someone new i was dating unknowingly put it on at the right moment to create new memories. i consider myself cured.

The only album I can think of that's pretty much ruined for me due to association with a failed relationship is the soundtrack to Prince's Purple Rain.
