I'm about to lose access, so two fast answers:

There's too many good cheap acoustics to quibble over. Try, buy, then upgrade later when it counts.

For electrics: Mexican Fenders (ask Haq) are Great for the $. Otherwise, Epiphone makes top-notch cheapshit korean Gibson knockoffs, and gibson owns them. Again, good for the $.

for acoustics, I really like Martin guitars. I agree though that you really gotta go to a store and try stuff out to see what you like.

for electircs, I like the 72 Telecaster deluxe reissue (not the hollow body one).

Acoustics:

Martin DXM, retail $669, probably can get it from Guitar Center for $500. Comes with a hard case (key), and will keep you satisfied for life. Easily the best acoustic between $400 and $1000.

Anything under $400 that I would recommend? Um, Seagulls, Yamahas, that's about it.

If you want to spend more than 1K, you've got alot of good choices that open up.

But why buy low and upgrade later when you can be straight for $500?

Electrics:
Epiphones, Mexi fenders, ibanez for the metal, stay away from schecters, and keep in mind that you'll have to buy an amp, go fender pro jr. or blues jr.

Well now that Phil has answered we should probably just end the thread. However, I agree with the go and try some out because every brand and every model, of acoustics, sounds different than the next. You gotta find what you like.

But, for the money, I would say to get a Sigma Martin. You can get a nice straight acoustic for like 250. Nice action. Wonderful sound, in the Low E, A, and D strings, in my opinion. Great learning guitar. Typyically a nice narrow neck. Easy to play them bar chords and such.

I know you said you don't want to spend a lot, but that changes, my vote is and always will be Taylor guitars. They are wonderfully made. I bought the cheaper version and it still cost me 1700. But, if you ask me, you can really play around with them because they use a handful of different woods, etc. But, the 2k to 2.5k ones are really only that expensive because of the extras, like expensive tuning keys and stuff like that. I love my Taylor and wonder why I ever enjoyed my Takamenie (sp). I just don't remember how to spell it anymore.

If you're gonna spend over 2K, you can do better than Taylors.

So Joe, uh... don't ever pick up say, a Collings. Especially their 12 fret slothead.

I second the fender blues jr recomendation. For the money it can't be beat.

Phil. Did you just call me a name? :)

In seriousness. I have never actually heard the noise that cometh from one of them. I don't even know of a place that would have one of em.
