When wearing a spread collar shirt:

or a point collar shirt:

Use some fucking COLLAR STAYS:

If you feel the need to not wear a button down, please follow this advice.

Also, as a general rule: spread/point collars w/ a jacket, button down w/o.

(This thread sparked by 3 people in the past 3 days with their collars pointing at me.)

I imagine there's a distintion to be made between metrosexuals and gentlemen. A Gentleman is outward in his gracious ministrations. A metrosexual's self-involved.

Agreed. I suppose in the stories I'm relaying there was one of each. Senor Six is neither of the above-mentioned... he's a gentleman alright, but fashion-wise he's a little more on the easy-going-earthy-artsy-straightboy-type.

I actually never knew a thing about collar stays until my husband recently pointed out that he wears them every day with his button downs.

I think Dave is indeed a Gentleman, albeit a sauced one with an irrational hatred of Angelina Jolie.

I'll back you up Sen. I agree.

I openly refuse to wear button down collars anymore. Just not a fan at all.

No way, that's totally a preference thing akin to wearing a French Cuff shirt with jeans and no jacket--there are simply not any hard and fast rules on things like that anymore.

I totally agree with you on the collar stays though, those pockets in the collar are there for a reason.

And...

Yeah, Bloor's right on the rule. Although some spread collars if they're big and wide cut just don't look right without a jacket and a tie, unless you're really purposefully going for the 70's pimp daddy look.

"Button-down" refers to the buttons on the collar, so he wouldn't wear a collar stay with a button-down (collar) shirt.

I thought button-down shirt was any shirt with buttons down the front of it.

Guess women shouldn't get so upset when men say things like "nice dress" when we're really wearing a skirt.

I did too until a few weeks ago when I was on the can reading a GQ or Esquire. Rocked my world. Now I don't know what to call a long-sleeved shirt with buttons down the front and a collar. A polo?
