Now this comment (and Haq's ad hoc addition) is another matter. I'll allow that volume can get annoying and definitely ruin a night out. But this is a quantity and not a quality issue.

Yeah, DJ, I'll rarely be put off entirely by bad music. But the bars that play shitty music tend to play it loud, and be full of jackasses.

Christ, I practically lived at The Lantern for a couple years back in the mid 90's.

Back then the jukebox was actually pretty friggin cool. Yeah there were some crappy songs on it, big deal.

Hell my friend and I got thrown out of there one night because she unplugged the jukebox trying to get a song to fix itself. She ended up shutting all the lights off in the bar. Oops.

There's a place that's next door though that did play a lot of cheesy stuff but I honestly could give a crap about that. Unless I'm being dragged to one of those ultra nasty suburban dance bars where the girls still have big hair and tight faded jeans and the guys are wearing chains-I don't get super uptight about the music where I'm at.

Places like Pizza Hut, where's there's obese teenagers having birthday parties and they put Shania on the jukebox and go omigod, I frickin' luv this song and dance all jello-vat wobbly rotund-retarded round the salad bar, yeah that bugs me a bit.

I never knew there were sit-down Pizza Huts in existance.

Great topic. I'm pretty much up for going anywhere, even crappy places, if a)it's where my friends want to go or b) it's much more convenient than a cooler place.

For me, what makes me leave a bar fastest is really loud music over the speakers or a live band I didn't come to the bar specifically to see. I can't stand not being able to talk to people without shouting at the top of my lungs. What's the point in going if you can't talk to the friends you came with?

Seriously? That's all Pizza Hut was here for a long time. Then they started the delivery and pick-up only places but those only came after Papa Johns started getting huge.

We have Shakey's Pizza -- do those exist in the midwest or east coast? And, of course, Chuck E Cheese.

I live in one of the best cities in the nation to raise children, so you know they ain't dropping Spank Rock followed by "let's make love and listen to death from above" at the bars/clubs. Do you ever get dragged out to bars where you know the music is god awful and just don't enjoy yourself due to what is played? I just did. Maybe I need to just loosen up? I just can't get into music I fucking dispise of and then expected to dance to. Thoughts??

This happens to me everytime I'm not at Schuba's, Simon's, Gingerman or Delilah's. I need a good soundtrack to have fun. If the playlist is off, I turn into superbitch.

As previously mentioned, I feel particularly bad when this (inevitably) happens at someone's wedding.

people you care about + happy occation + some of the worst music in existence + pressure to dance and "have fun"
= sad, sad Polly

It is absolutely essential that an in-law-to-be is dispensing copius amounts of free champagne.

The second sentence is ultimately my problem. Let me attempt to clarify now that I'm more with it...

I was with work people that I recently met while teaching summer school, so I really don't even know these people. And Haq is beyond right, Naperville has no options for anything when it comes to nightlife. When I'm with my friends I've grown up with or anyone I care about, then the music isn't a factor, because I've totally grown to appreciate that time, especially with people all married and shit. Thanks for the responses though.

It was Rizzo's.

I would have said say no but a few months ago I was at a bar with one of those internet jukebox things and some hippies went on a tangent and played (literaly) like an hours worth of widespread panic. It seriously put a damper on the mood.

Those interntet jukeboxes are dangerous in the wrong hands.

I like some Widespread Panic, but hours of it would make me kill hippies.

living in la, i know where to avoid shitty music and shitty places... however there's that rare occasion where i'll get dragged to a stupid place with music i despise - but i usually try to make the most of it (and just as long as there is booze).

i would like to hear more about these cookies of which you speak.
in all seriousness, i have no friends so getting dragged someplace isnt much of a problem.
if anybody who DOES know me wishes to throw a couple back, i'm at hank's. the music isnt always great, but the beer is cheap [$2 pbr in the can. i'm not snobby about it if it's cold] & cold beer trumps everything else.

if you guys can't enjoy crappy music in a bar (or at least disregard it) with your friends, you shouldn't be allowed to drink.

The only two places where I have seen Shakey's Pizza are West Allis, Wisc., and Mexico City, Mexico. No in-between.

Yeah, sometimes I'll go to a shitty shitty bar because that's where some friends are going, because I want to see my friends. Sometimes, the godawful atmosphere isn't enough to bother me, sometimes it is. I'm sure you can rise above "Wanted Dead or Alive" in a zenlike state as long as you're with a chum, but we're not all so lucky. Sometimes when I'm surrounded by popped collars and Nelly is playing too loudly for me to hear the conversation, I have a hard time having fun.

This sums it up for me. If I'm with good friends that I haven't seen in a while, it really doesn't matter where we are. The enjoyment of spending time with old friends trumps a shitty atmosphere.

But if I'm with people that aren't as important to me, the clientele and music tend to play a bigger role as to whether I'm having a good time. I don't have too many friends here who share the same interests I have, so I don't really go out that much anymore. rut: me :rut
