i love seeing matinees by myself. Because I can smoke pot in the theater. No, but there's something to be said about being the only one in the room with the giant screen. There's a few movies where it's always better with other people (hello, Team America, but more often than not I usually prefer to see a non-comedy/action movie alone.

I'm so used to going to movies by myself, the question for me is when to go with someone to a movie that I'd actually like to see. (That last movie was "Sideways", BTW.) For most of the friends in my age group, if there's no T&A and gazillion-dollar explosions, it's warrants an "I'll think about it."

And forget about it if there's subtitiles.

I have no clue, Dana. If I'm visiting a town any longer than a weekend, my RSVP rate for anything I organize there is less than 10%. If it's where I'm living it's 5% or less. Tempted to book everything for my 30th birthday now, send out a save-the-date and RSVP deal, and see what happens.

the only movie i've ever seen by myself was "freddy vs. jason", truly a film that deserved my uninterrupted contemplation.

Movies: I can't go alone. Maybe I should try this method out though, because all my film geek friends are up in LA and after work when I want to see a movie- I don't want to have to drive all the way up just to watch a damn movie.

Shows: I don't mind going alone. Sometimes, I prefer it that way. My friends either 1) flake at the last minute, so I hate scrambling around trying to find someone to go with... then end up missing the show because of this, or 2) lag, or 3) if they haven't heard of the band yet, they are skeptical to go. So I decided fuck it- I go by myself when I want to. Bigger concerts however, I go with someone.

Restaurants: umm rarely. Only when I go to eat breakfast/brunch when I'm hungover.

God, it's so irritating. It's hard not to take it personally sometimes, but I think that there are people who genuinely do not give a rip about rsvp'ing and are always in that "well, I won't respond in case something better comes up."

As an example, we had a kitchen unveiling party this past Saturday, which got royally screwed since Portland had an ice storm on (guess when?) Saturday. So the 44 people we were expecting ended up being around 15. No big deal. We still had fun, but the people who couldn't make it called, very apologetic and still expressed interest in seeing the kitchen. So I try to organize some smaller gatherings for my various groupings of friends. I suggested to some friends of doing a happy hour at my place on the 28th. 3 of the 5 people have already responded saying yes. The other two (and it always seems to be the same two) haven't even acknowledged the invitation. It's no surprise, since they are a couple, and my guy friend has to defer to his girlfriend's approval before they commit to anything (which is irritating in itself). What is the harm is just RESPONDING and saying, "let me check with my girlfriend, and we'll see. Thanks for inviting us."

Rudeness seems to prevail in this day and age.

Because we suck.

No, seriously -- we're just too disorganized. Don't take it personally, it's got nothing to do with you, we usually feel just as guilty that we're doing a priority three activity (as in, on a scale of one-to- ) when we should be doing a one.

So I did go to see Sideways alone tonight. Moving to a new city where I know very few people, it just made sense. Although I don't know why I waited 3 years to go to a movie by myself again. Pretty much all of my friends back at school wouldn't want to see a movie like Sideways.
