I actually never knew a thing about collar stays until my husband recently pointed out that he wears them every day with his button downs.

"Button-down" refers to the buttons on the collar, so he wouldn't wear a collar stay with a button-down (collar) shirt.

I thought button-down shirt was any shirt with buttons down the front of it.

Guess women shouldn't get so upset when men say things like "nice dress" when we're really wearing a skirt.

I did too until a few weeks ago when I was on the can reading a GQ or Esquire. Rocked my world. Now I don't know what to call a long-sleeved shirt with buttons down the front and a collar. A polo?

"Dress shirt" works pretty well.

Also, if you have a big, round Spalding style HEED like me, go for the spread collar, or you'll look like you're head's gonna pop right off. If you look like John Kerry with a long, tall head that resembles a melting candle, go for the point collar.

I mistyped in my original post.

If you wear a tie, the general rule is to wear a point/spread collar.

No tie, button down is better.

I break said rule ALL the time, by wearing buttondowns with ties.

and yeah, buttondown refers to collar, button-up refers to a shirt with buttons all the way down it.

And if anyone wants to quibble from here on in, I will let ayah be the final arbiter.

Can only guess at what "collar stays" are.

Collar stays are the cockrings of the fashion world. Ultimately, pretty self-explanatory. :)

Shit, I don't even buy dress shirts 'cause I know I'll never iron them.

I am going out to buy a suit jacket tomorrow for a job interview next week. If all goes as planned (I get job, job doesn't require the wearing of jackets), I will never wear that jacket again.

Generally correct, although we'd've also accepted tab collar.

Incidentally, a plastic box of metal collar stays looks like a magazine of bullets to the people x-raying your carry-on at the airport.

I have seen these worn well, they give your tie some more oomph.

You reccomend the metal collar stays? I generally just use the plastic ones cos I always forget to take them out before dropping my shirts at the dry cleaners.
