So I am checking out his new album, entitled "Highway Companion" - PM me if you want a taste.

I am not a petty fan at all - but for some reason I have decided to check it out.

So that brings me to my next question. For those that like him - What album do you consider to be his best?

I'd definitely like a pm (or email); I hope it's better than the last one, but Highway Companion sounds like a good name.

As far as albums go, I'd say Damn the Torpedoes for early period and Wildflowers for late period Petty.

That debut is good, but everything upto and including Long After Dark is great classic Petty. After that some albums are better than others, and some singles as good as his early ones. IMHO.

Actually just popped in Long After Dark the other day. It held up surprisingly well.

1. Full Moon Fever
2. Into The Great Wide Open
3. Wildflowers

The last 3 discs have been pretty much crap.

I actually thought that "Echo" was pretty damn good. Not a big "Great Wide Open" fan, and I've never heard "Wildfolwers", though all reports tell me I should, "Full Moon Fever" is great, but "Damn the Torpedoes" still seems to be the gold standard of Petty releases, at least those that I have.

Bob, I can't see how "She's the One" is #3.
It is logically impossible.

she's the one is definitely underrated, but still not #3 in tom petty's discography.

The last 3 discs have been pretty much crap.

I'll second the lineup, but I have to say that Echo was quite good in spots. The rest have of his 90s stuff has not interested me so much - and The Last DJ was downright awful.

This Highway Companion is not too bad actually. It's on the mellow side, but he still sounds great after all these years, his voice is practically ageless. There are a few great songs on the album, so Petty fans should definitely check it out. And it's aptly named as driving and highway references figure prominently. Once again, I think I give this one higher marks because it's not too long, clocking at 43 min. The only real clunker on the album for me is the final track 'Golden Rose'; it's not a horrible song the music is pretty good, but I rank it low because of one distracting point. The chorus goes something like "...gooooodbye gollllden rose", which was really too metaphorically and melodically similar to "Goodbye Yellowbrick Road". So that's what I was left with when the album finishes. An Elton John priming effect.

Has one of my top 3 Petty songs: "Walls"

I guess if we are gonna say that, have to give the other 2:
Rebels
You're So Bad
