T-square's appliance installation thread got me thinking... What do you provide to wait-staff (to be gender non-specific, for the bjw's of the world) at a restaurant?

Relatedly, do you drop a few coins -- quarters, most likely -- or a dollar in the tip-jar at your local cafe? Do - you - tip - your - barista?

(On that, I tip if I have coinage and/or dollars to show, but since I do almost all of my non-billing transactions on debit card, I don't carry cash, usually.)

20% usually.

Sometimes I'll tip baristas and cafe cashiers that have tip jars.

20 ussually. I tip less if the waiter or waitress is really awful
BUt, to the converse, I hardly ever tip more than 20%
But, I do tip on the taxed amount not the pre-tax amount

I'll shoot for 20 if the server was passable. I'll be more generous if they were good.

If they sucked, I'll go under 15.

I rarely tip at the register cups, but if someone stands out (charm, humor, helpful, cleavage) I'll drop a hunk in. It's either a couple bucks or nothing.

Bartenders: I tip for the first several trips, then about every other one, then a fat tip when I'm wasted and leaving.

Car Wash Guys: $5-10, depending on the hook-up.

typically you're supposed to tip on the amount of the food, and drink, not on the tax.

I tip very well - per $10 I drop at least 3 bucks for a tip, provided the service was good. Although sometimes I feel so bad for the truly awful server that I end up tipping them way too much - I figure nobody else is going to, and one really nice tip might just make their night.

I rarely tip baristas or cafe cashiers, though. Mr. Pink had it right - you have to draw the line somewhere.

for restaurants i double the tip, unless their really nice, then i tip a little more.

for coffee, if they're just pouring me a cup of coffee, i only tip if i have an extra buck or extra change. if they're making an actual espresso drink, i tip a dollar.

but if they're not polite, screw them. especially when they spend their time talking to each other and don't pay any attention to the customer.

20% for food at restaurants

$1/drink at bars (I only go to dives with cheap booze)

I tip 15% at restaurants.
I give my bartender or waitress a buck for every drink, unless the same person has served me three drinks in a row, then I don't tip them any more.
I give the barista .50 for the first cup, which usually costs me 1.25 for a cup of coffee and a quarter for each refill which cost a quarter.

I usually double the tax, then round up/down depending on service, bill total vs. getting change back, and how much cash I have in my wallet...

With California's hefty 8.5%, I'll give 15% as a pretty good estimate, though it's usually closer to 20%...

The combination of that comment, plus your current moniker.... Damned funny stuff.

The Swami is larger than life, though. He doesn't need to tip to get the dolls to go with him. In fact, too many want in as it is. He has to beat them off with unsold ESPNmobile units to get his harem down to a manageable size.

At least 20 unless they really pissed me off and never less than 15. I'm also very forgiving about mistakes. I've been a waiter before so I know what it's like. I generally cut them a lot of slack.

The only tips I give are of the "when its raining, carry an umbrella"

I have a tip calculator on my phone, so usually go 20%, but will give up to 25%.

If I'm new in town, or I think I will become a regular, I throw around some serious money the first couple of times, so they know I'm not just some schmuck off the street.
