This may not be much help, but I found their/his stuff pretty boring. All it made me do was want to lsiten to Vetiver since I like it so much more. I would say do NOT start with Gipsy Freedom- it is really difficult to listen to. WW's record without the Vanishing Voice (name escpaes me) was probably the most accessible one that I remember.

Well... my recommendation is pretty much directly contrary to Balls'. I would say start with either Gipsy Freedom or The Flood. Not at all similar to Vetiver IMO, but closer to more freeform bands like Jackie-O Motherfucker.

I do agree that Wooden Wand's solo album Harem of the Sundrum & the Witness Figg is very good, but I really haven't listened to it that much.

Just stay away from their first couple of releases, Xiao and Angel Hair. Now those are difficult to listen to. This band started out pretty shitty, IMO, and I was kinda surprised when I heard their first decent release, Buck Dharma, a little over a year ago.

On the Sadies- I can highly recommend Stories Often Told and the album Red Dirt which they did with Andre Williams.

As far as Espers go- I liked it pretty well, but found the solo album from Greg Weeks which is called Blood is Trouble just awesome. It reminded me a lot of Sea Change by Beck.

I LOVE The Sadies. Their record with Jon Langford (Mekons/Waco Bros.) is Class-A Badass!!
Earlier stuff is more surfy/Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, less Byrdsian.
