It's because they have to put some effort into the prerecorded bits. When you have to film and edit stuff, you probably have a higher level of quality control than when you can just go, "Here, we wrote this, go say this on stage and attempt to make it funny."

Oddly, I saw the re-run of the Matt Dillon hosted episode from early April, and it was very solid. Even musical guest Arctic Monkeys was mildly impressive. Is that a sign of rebound, or an aberration?
