I am seeing this tomorrow night. I am excited for this. M. Night's movies have been hit and miss with me.

I saw the sixth sense like 4 months after it came out and everyone kept telling me about the surprise ending and I ended up not being able to get it out of my head so I figured it out half way through and it ruined it for me.

I thought Unbreakable was pretty lame.

I thought Signs was slightly above average but was a decent flick.

I had The Village ruined for me as well, thanks to Obner and my own inability to read. I thought the village thread said "spoilers NOT included". However, I was wrong, so I had that one ruined for me as well.

I am excited to see a movie without hearing anything about it before hand besides the previews. I am hoping it is as good as it looks. Paul Giammati is probably my favorite actor out there right now, with Phillip Seymour Hoffman running a close second.

At any rate, is anyone on here a lover of M. Night movies? Haters? Excited for this film?

That movie ruined itself, the "twist" was so obvious I figured it out shortly after the movie started, but thought to myself, "Surely that's not the twist, right? Because that's so simple it's retarded." Nope, that really was the twist, and it really was retarded.

At least this one has no twist, from what I've read and he's even said he wants to be done with that. I'm just not sure what else Shyamalan has to offer besides that.

Rottentomatoes.com is giving it 26% right now.

Love M. Night and all his movies.

Looking forward to seeing this one. Ron Howard's daughter is in this film as well, right?

Yeah, from the previews she appears to be the lady in the water. At least I think that's Bryce Dallas. I like her name too.

Unbreakable was pretty good, and definitely MNS's best movie. Signs and The Village were godawful--the former was laughably bad.

Here are some early returns on LITW:

Quote:
"Lady in the Water isn't just another disappointment. It's a jaw-dropping catastrophe -- a picture so wrong-headedly intoxicated with itself you view it through an embarrassed haze."-- Eleanor Ringel Gillespie, ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION
"Unless I've totally miscalculated the audience appeal of this stinker, the executives he pummeled in that book are going to look more like astute visionaries than back-stabbing traitors, and should be wearing very big smiles come Monday morning."-- William Arnold, SEATTLE POST
"I suspect audiences will see Shyamalan's portentous doodle for what it is -- the height of arrogance and a bad night out at the movies."-- Peter Rainer, CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR
"Lady in the Water marks M. Night Shyamalan's official leap off the deep end. Not everyone agrees on Shyamalan's talent as a filmmaker, but few, up till now, have questioned his sanity."-- Dana Stevens, SLATE

Doesn't sound promising.

Ok, here's the NY Observer review (just the 1st paragraph):

Quote:
As vacation time nears, it is safe to say that no matter how rotten things get on the big screen during the rest of the summer, the worst of it is over. Hollywood cannot pollute the ozone with anything more idiotic, contrived, amateurish or sub-mental than Lady in the Water. This piece of pretentious, paralyzing twaddle is the latest in a series of head-scratchers by the incompetent, self-delusional M. Night Shyamalan. He’s the writer, producer and director, and terrible at all three, but if that isn’t bad enough, this time he has even gone one further and cast himself in one of the roles. I am here to tell you he is about as camera-ready as the corpse that Tommy Lee Jones dragged across the cactus in Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. In a war of wits, brains, imagination and talent, Mr. Shyamalan would be defenseless.

I've never read a more scathing 1st paragraph in a movie review--I don't think Rex likes Mr. Shyamalan. Again, doesn't sound promising.

The Christian Science monitor is really not unrespectable, and their reviews are not bad. I was sort of looking forward to this when I saw that he was trying a new direction, but now I'm looking forward to it to see how bad it is. Got plenty of AMC passes.

It's not that CSM is unrespectable, it's just that their taste hardly matches with mine...ever.

I'm sorry to hear the about the other bad press this movie is getting. I'll still go and see this no matter what. The Village got scathing reviews but I really liked it. A bad Night movie is X1000 better than the usual summer fare such as: You, Me, and Dupree bullshit.

It sounds more like Rex wanted to roll out his grudge against MNS than he was interested in reviewing the movie.

I liked how when Jon Stewart had him on the show the other day, they showed a clip and then cut back to Jon hiding behind the desk.

'hey guys, we have to cut a 'lady in the water' promo for tv, what should we do?'
'ooh, i know, let's have a little girl whisper! that always sounds creepy to me, like when children's choirs sing only vowel sounds.'
'brilliant!'

Man, when a movie gets reviews that are that bad, I can't help wanting to see it out of morbid curiousity.

Also, I don't think I saw the whole thing, but The Village seemed alright to me. It didn't seem to hinge so much on revealing the twist as it did actually developing and exploring it. At least I think it did. I should probably watch the whole thing some time.

I have no use for the rest of his movies, though, and I would be completely fine if he just went away after this one.

Agreed. Rex definitely appears to have an ax to grind. But reading through several other similar reviews on Rottentomatoes, I think his negative review likely has some merit. I doubt they all have a grudge against MNS.

I have disagreed with nearly every scathing review I've read of MNS's movies. Haven't disliked any of his films yet.

I liked Unbreakable quite a lot.

The clip they played on the Daily Show seemed less like scary and more like parody. I think if you like the tone that MNS establishes in his films, you can put up with some of the lesser qualities of his writing/plots.

Liked it lots. Signs had some good scenes, but crapped out for the most part. Sixth Sense was respectable. The Village I have not seen but probably will when nothing else looks worthwhile at the vid store.

After watching this film, I really don't know why people, as in reviewers, had such an issue with it. Is it the best movie of the summer or eternally life changing for humanity? No. However, the acting, as in Paul Giamatti, is superb. The story is great. If you can manage to escape your reality world and buy into a kids story coming to life and use your fucking imagination then it is actually a quite entertaining film. The only drawback for me was seeing M. Night being in a major role. He was not the lead but was in a lot of the movie. I kind of don't like it when directors make themselves main roles. He's not a bad actor at all, but I would just prefer that he stick to directing. The only exception I can think to this would be Garden State.

Now, the previews before this showing all looked awesome. I am excited for the handful of movies. Some really good reputation directors making some new movies finally. See my soon to be posted thread about the one I am most excited to see...

Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford, Tim Robbins, Sean Penn, Orson Welles, Steve Buscemi.

Kevin Smith if he doesn't talk.
